Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Locked in an intergalactic juvenile detention facility, Superboy and Robin meet the youngest…and meanest…Green Lantern ever! Well, sort of a GL. Mostly a GL. Really more of a trainee, but don’t tell the bad guys, okay? Plus, Joker Jr. returns…the clown who may be the boys’ last, best hope to stop the Gang!
RATED T
STEPHEN: I really loved the previous issue, and know I’m all on board to see what happens to John… and that other kid, and Joker, Jr.
BATMAN #64
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Guillem March
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE PRICE” part one! The two greatest detectives in the DC Universe take on the one cold case that will tear them apart!
As chief architect of the Sanctuary program that cost so much for so many, especially Wally West, Batman will be held accountable…by the Flash!
A cold case from the Justice League’s past has mysteriously re-opened, and Batman and the Flash-the only two heroes who stand a chance of cracking the case-are at each other’s throats! Our heroes must combat a demon from the past while burying their own inner demons in the process…and neither the World’s Greatest Detective nor the Fastest Man Alive will ever be the same again! But who is really pulling the strings here? And how does Gotham Girl fit into all this? Friendships will be tested and blood will be spilled in this titanic crossover event…
WAYNE: The last time Mr. Williamson worked on Batman, it turned into that huge four-part intro to the Watchmen in the DCU. What does he have in store this time? I gotta know!
CHAMPIONS #2
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Steven Cummings
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When the dream is at stake, everything you believe in and have fought dearly for, what would you be willing to sacrifice to keep it alive? One of the Champions has made a choice that will haunt them for the rest of their days… And now the villain behind that decision has everything they need to shatter the next generation of heroes.
MATTHEW: More Champions, more problems, but a fascinating mix of characters with strong Zub writing to tie it all together make for a good read. Plus: The Locust!!
DIE #3
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Stephanie Hans
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “FANTASY HEARTBREAKER,” Part Three: One of the saddest comics in Kieron’s career. One of Stephanie’s prettiest. Clayton’s lettering, of course, remains impeccable.
MATTHEW: I missed issue #1, but really enjoyed #2, enough to go seek out the beginning.. Now, I’m looking forward to seeing where this RPG-inspired tale is going.
FEMALE FURIES #1
Writer: Cecil Castellucci
Artist: Adriana Melo
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: All their lives the Female Furies have been raised to be the meanest, most cunning and most ruthless fighting force on all of Apokolips. So why are Granny Goodness’ girls left behind every time the men go to war? With the might of New Genesis hanging over the planet, and the Forever People making mincemeat out of Darkseid’s army, Granny thinks it’s about time that changed. And so, Big Barda, Aurelie, Mad Harriet, Lashina, Bernadeth and Stompa set out to beat the boys at their own game. Little do they know the game is rigged-and one accidental murder could spell disaster for them all!
MATTHEW: Big Barda with Adrian Melo art? You don’t have to offer that one twice, I’m in…
STEPHEN: After the Mister Miracle series, I think there is a renewed interest in the New Gods, so it will be interesting to see what happens when Granny Goodness and her Female Furries get their own series. Not a big fan of villain worship, but knowing what happens to Big Barda, I think there could be some good things to come in this series.
WAYNE: I really enjoyed the recent Mister Miracle miniseries, so I’m fascinated to see just what this creative team has in mind for the women of Apokolips! Should be something special!
MAN AND SUPERMAN 100 PAGE SUPER SPECTACULAR #1
Writer: Marv Wolfman
Artist: Claudio Castellini
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $9.99
SOLICITATION: “This is the best Superman story I’ve ever written.” So says living legend Marv Wolfman, and when you’ve written hundreds of Superman stories as he has, it means a great deal. This gem of a tale – written and drawn from 2006-2009 for the SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL series – explodes from the DC archives as a triumphant tale of Clark Kent’s fateful first days in Metropolis, which were far from easy. His early failures almost ensured there would never be a hero called Superman. Powerful writing and stunning art combine to conjure an inspiring story that needed to be published, one you will never forget, from a pair of master storytellers.
WAYNE: This was considered his “lost” Superman story, so I’m very interested to see what Wolfman, of New Teen Titans fame, had in mind!
PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #6
Writer: Rob Williams
Artist: Sergio Davila
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It is the final confrontation between the alien invader P:andora and the surviving members of Project Superpowers. Can they make one last stand? Do a sense of hope and true heroes still exist in this world? Or will all life on planet Earth be a thing of the past?
INGRID: It’s the final issue in this arc, and Project Superpowers has been a solid, entertaining book. I like that the characters feel new to me and that this has been a sort of combination origin story and huge battle. I particularly like the juxtaposition of Imani Cooper, who is new and optimistic, against the Project Superpowers team, who are experienced but a bit more jaded.
THESE SAVAGE SHORES #3
Writer: Ram V
Artist: Sumit Kumar
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The stench of war clings to the air as Hyder Ali of Mysore comes calling for the levy. Good men and demons alike are set to march, even as lovers part with the promise of a safe return. But in these troubling times the promise of a hunt brings the devil himself to this faraway coast. Along These Savage Shores where blood begets blood and dawn-light shimmers over a land soaked in betrayal.
INGRID: I think These Savage Shores is one of the best comics I’ve ever read. It is like a historical novel, a horror story, and a thriller combined on a grand scale. European vampires we understand, but India has powerful beings of its own. While vampires are hunted and strive to keep their lives hidden, the Raakshas we meet in India strives to protect the people around him. I don’t have enough room to go on about just how great this book is.
