IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    Bone Parish #4BONE PARISH #4
    Writer: Cullen Bunn
    Artist: Jonas Scharf
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Following a devastating loss at the hands of the cartel, the Winters family is in turmoil. To defeat their foes, they might have to break the cardinal rule of dealing: never get high on your own supply…

STEPHEN: Cullen Bunn and horror go hand in hand, even when the tale is one of drug dealers and the deals they make. A different story, but one that I have been enjoying.

    Hex Wives 1HEX WIVES #1
    Writer: Ben Blacker
    Artist: Mirka Andolfo
    Publisher: DC Comics/Vertigo
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “The women are too powerful. They must be tamed.” For hundreds of years a war has been waged between a coven of perpetually reincarnating witches and the all-male conspiracy known as the Architects. After the death of the lead Architect in 2005 it seemed the witches had finally defeated their foes. Now, 13 years later, waking up in a perfect cookie cutter home at the end of a cul-de-sac in a sunny corner of suburbia, Isadora has no recollection of her past life as the leader of a witch coven, nor her soulmate Nadiya, let alone the centuries-old war she has waged in defense of the soul of America…

STEPHEN: I’ve had my hands on this for a week now, and I really enjoyed this story. It isn’t what you think, and totally what you need. Plus, it is written by one-half of the team behind the Thrilling Adventure Hour, so why not give this a chance?

MATTHEW: Halloween appropriate and an intriguing creative team. I’m all-in.

    maneaters2MAN-EATERS #2
    Writer: Chelsea Cain
    Artist: Kate Niemczyk
    Publisher: Image Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Maude experiences abdominal cramping and a sudden increased appetite. Her father investigates another mauling.

MATTHEW: The first issue of this series was immediately on my “must-buy” list. It should be on yours, too.

    Nancy Drew #5NANCY DREW #5
    Writer: Kelly Thompson
    Artist: Jenn St-Onge
    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: WHERE’S BESS!?!?!?!? Nancy and the gang race against the clock to find Bess before she meets the same fate as the other women in their case. Can Nancy solve the mystery in time to save her friend and close a case that’s haunted Bayport for nearly a decade? It’s a sprint to the finish by writer KELLY THOMPSON (Hawkeye, West Coast Avengers) and artist JENN ST-ONGE (Giant Days, The Misfits) in this fiery conclusion!

INGRID: It’s the end of the arc, and a very good mystery this has been all along. I can’t wait to read the conclusion, but at the same time, I don’t want it to end. This has been a great update and revitalization of Nancy Drew.

    nightwing

    NIGHTWING MAGILLA GORILLA SPECIAL #1
    Writer: Heath Corson
    Artist: Tom Grummett, Tom Derenick
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: When a famous Hollywood talent agent is found brutally murdered, suspicion and evidence seem to point to his most famous client, Oscar-winning actor Magilla Gorilla. Dick Grayson, already in Tinseltown to meet with said agent, senses something suspicious. Donning his Nightwing costume and joining forces with the simian suspect, he’s got one night to prove that this monkey doesn’t belong in a cage. Plus, part three of a Secret Squirrel backup story written by J.M. DeMatteis.

INGRID: I really have a fondness for the Hanna Barbera crossovers, and this one intrigues me – a detective story involving Magilla Gorilla, but with a serious streak to it. I think it will be well worth reading.

west coast avengersWEST COAST AVENGERS #3
    Writer: Kelly Thompson
    Artist: Stefano Caselli
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: If the team thought a 50-Foot Woman version of Tigra was trouble, just wait till they get a load of her “friends.” That’s right, it’s close encounters of the very large and destructive kind as the West Coast Avengers try to save the day from B-movie-monster-sized threats roaming Los Angeles! And while her team takes the direct approach, Kate Bishop finds herself in a compromising position when trying to get ahead of the game… Is she going to end up on the wrong side of this battle?!

MATTHEW: I’m really enjoying this book. It’s light-hearted, fun and snarky but never feels inconsequential, and it has a great cast and creative team.

black emma frostX-MEN BLACK EMMA FROST #1
    Writer: Leah Williams
    Artist: Chris Bachalo
    Publisher: Marvel
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: THE DIAMOND DIVA STRIKES BACK! Before she was an X-Man, Emma Frost was White Queen of the Hellfire Club where she labored under the yolk of Sebastian Shaw, the Black King. Now she sets her sights on the club, determined to tear down the organization that wronged her…if she can convince the X-Men to help out. PLUS: Part 5 of X-MEN BLACK: APOCALYPSE!

STEPHEN: I’ve been hearing all sorts of positive things about the X-Men: Black series, and a lot of early buzz on Emma Frost, so I’m gonna check this out, and you should to. Then we can talk about it, while drinking a variety of teas.
