IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

beasts of burdenBEASTS OF BURDEN: WISE DOGS AND ELDRITCH MEN #3
    Writer: Evan Dorkin
    Artist: Benjamin Dewey
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Wise Dogs encounter a survivor of the Cotter Farm massacre who agrees to lead them to the witch-cult’s camp high in the mountains, which can only be reached by a treacherous path leading through a series of insidious traps and a host of deadly creatures.

INGRID: This is a horrifying story, but the Wise Dogs are magnificent. They’re heading into the center of things and who knows how things will turn out? The art is absolutely beautiful to look at, except for the monsters. And the dead bodies. But the tension of the story and determination of the dogs is wonderful.

books of magicBOOKS OF MAGIC #1
    Writer: Kat Howard
    Artist: Tom Fowler
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Timothy Hunter may be destined to become the most powerful magician in the universe, but he’s still a London teenager, and having magical abilities complicates things more than it helps. It’s not like he can use magic to pass his exams, stop being bullied or convince his cute friend to date him. And while Tim’s trying to live his life, there are cultists who want to kill him, believing his power will eventually corrupt him into becoming a merciless mage. Oh, and those are the good guys. Luckily, his new substitute teacher is more than she appears, and may be able to help Tim discover the mystery behind the Books of Magic…

MATTHEW: Is it a reboot or a new start? I don’t know, but I’m ready to find out.

STEPHEN: I really didn’t know how to approach the adventures of Tim when they first appeared over 20 years ago, but I did find an appreciation later in life. I’m ready to see what is coming next from DC Comics.

power rangers 32MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #32
    Writer: Marguerite Bennet, Ryan Ferrier
    Artist: Simone di Meo, Bachan
    Publisher: BOOM! Studios
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s morphin’ time in this powerful next chapter for Tommy Oliver, one of the most iconic Power Rangers in history. It’s been a long time since Tommy Oliver laid down the mantle of the original Green Ranger, and now he leaves protecting the world to Space Patrol Delta. But when his son goes missing, Tommy will call on all his training, his friends, and maybe even some of his enemies as he sets out on one last mission: find his son and bring him home. From Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Nightwing) and artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide Squad), with special consultant Jason David Frank, the original Green Ranger, comes the next adventure in the life of history’s mightiest Power Ranger.

MATTHEW: What comes after a massive universal crossover? It would see that we’re going to see some wild, weird stuff and I for one couldn’t be happier.

    olivia twist 2OLIVIA TWIST #2
Writer: Darin Strauss and Adam Dalva
    Artist: Emma Vieceli
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics, Inc.
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: 2050 London: The Esthers send Olivia on a heist into the Vertical City–a mile-high tower, the last refuge for wealthy Americans who have lost their country. But there’s incredible danger waiting for her on all sides: the mysterious killer from her nightmares, machine-augmented men, the most powerful C.E.O. in the world. And there is also, as it turns out, an even greater danger for Olivia: a love triangle.

INGRID: Olivia is free of the workhouse – but at what cost? The Esthers train her to pickpocket so she can earn back what she owes. She hardly knows who she is yet, other than an orphan defying the rules. But who is the mysterious cloaked man from her nightmares?

    xmenredX-MEN RED #9
    Writer: Tom Taylor
    Artist: Roge Antonia
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Following the shocking events of X-MEN RED #8, it’s time for Jean to finally confront her demon head-on. Jean Grey and Cassandra Nova… The showdown begins here!

MATTHEW: With the upcoming reworking of the X-titles, I plan to enjoy this weird, niche book for as long as it lasts. Which is seemingly two more issues…

ROBOT OVERLORD: Today is the day! Today you get to discover that one comic that you love! Enjoy your quest!
