IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
AVENGERS #6
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Ed McGuinness
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The final battle against the Dark Celestials. A battle unlike any the Avengers have ever experienced. A battle a million years in the making. The new team of heavy hitters assembles at last. But will the young, inexperienced Ghost Rider prove to be the most important and powerful member of all?
MATTHEW: I was worried about McGuinness on this book, but his art is restrained, the story is cool and the balance of new to old heroes is working for me. Plus: Lotsa Black Panther!
BEASTS OF BURDEN: WISE DOGS AND ELDRITCH MEN #1
Writer: Evan Dorkin
Artist: Benjamin Dewey
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A heroic pack of canines known as the Wise Dogs set off on a mission to clean up a Pennsylvania corridor plagued by seemingly unrelated occult disturbances that include a fire salamander and a horde of mutant lurkers. A link is found among the various disturbances, leading our heroes to a mountain village inhabited by a survivalist witch-cult who have discovered the existence of a ”Blood Lure” attracting occult forces, creatures, and many more terrors to Burden Hill!
INGRID: Adventure, monsters, and magic…and did I mention dogs? The dogs are the protectors of Burden Hill, and they’re the ones facing off against the monsters. This is a serious plot, and the artwork is just lovely. Plus one of the main characters is a Scottie.
STACY: The dogs in this series are such good dogs! If you live supernatural dramas and love animals, this is the book for you!
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA – OLD MAN JACK #12
Writer: John Carpenter, Anthony Burch
Artist: Michael Gaydos
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This is it – the final ride of the Pork-Chop Express.
MATTHEW: The most surprising part of this series for me is how much fun it is, with bizarre plot twists and a compelling (if not terribly self-aware) old-guy protagonist. This is how sequels should go!
DAMAGE ANNUAL #1
Writer: Robert Venditti
Artist: Diogenes Neves
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Damage’s earliest origins are revealed with an issue that delves into what made soldier Ethan Avery volunteer to become the monstrous, living weapon of mass destruction. Also discover what happened to the other recruits to the top-secret program that birthed Damage and tasked him with destroying any enemy trying to create their own monster on a leash.
STACY: Finally unveiling part of the past of Ethan Avery, this issue explains the events prior to the explosive first issue. A must read for fans and new readers alike.

MOTHER PANIC GOTHAM A D #6
Writer: Jody Houser
Artist: Ibrahim Moustafa
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Mother Panic must face all her demons-spiritual and biological-in this issue as she learns the true fate of the Violet of this world. Sibling rivalries, archnemeses and more square off against Mother Panic in this, the ultimate issue of GOTHAM A.D.!
CHRIS: I enjoyed Mother Panic when it first started, but post MIlk Wars has changed the book for the better. The character is able to be in a Gotham City that is different from the one we know and without a Batman. The costume design is awesome and the villain of this arc is truly terrifying. If you didn’t read it before, I suggest you try it now. Please don’t let it get canceled…
REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES: THE NICODEMUS JOB #2
Writer: Brian Clevinger
Artist: Meredith McClaren
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Imperial Library of Constantinople, home of the world’s largest collection of knowledge, sits inside a maze locked in a fortress under constant guard. It’s up to our crew of thieves and con artists drawn from across the Byzantine Empire to get in, steal four incredibly valuable texts, and escape without being caught or killed. Don’t worry, it only sounds impossible. It’s the crime of the century—the 11th century!
INGRID: This story is so good. This is a heist story set in Constantinople, 1095. The gang is together and are now trying to figure out how to pull a very difficult job. This is a fantastic book.
SUICIDE SQUAD ANNUAL #1
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Ronan Cliquet
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Thrown together to apprehend an escaped inmate, Solomon Grundy, Rag Doll and Merlyn head into the muck surrounding Belle Reve, but no one is prepared for a meeting with the Swamp Thing. Bodies decay quickly in the bayous of Louisiana, and the avatar of the Green doesn’t care if the Squad makes it out alive.
STACY: I love when we get to see a different team of criminals drafted by Waller, and this one gets to go up against one of the heaviest hitters in the DCU. Great choice of villains make it a pleasure for old school fans.
TERRIFICS #7
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dale Eaglesham
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Welcome to Millennium City in part one of “Tom Strong and the Terrifics”! To cure themselves of the Dark Energy bond that’s gripped them, the Terrifics use the Dark Multiverse antenna to track down the one man who can help them-Tom Strong. In Millennium City, the Terrifics follow Strong’s signal, only to find his lab destroyed and his loyal A.I. aide Pneuman shattered. And the weirdness doesn’t end when a mystical tree transports the team across the universe.
CHRIS: Two words why you should read the Terrifics – Plastic Man. I was devastated when I found out Gail Simone’s Plastic Man is only six issues, but at least I get him here. People can talk all the garbage they want about this being DC’s Fantastic Four, but Jeff Lemire is doing more than that. Seriously, give this one a chance. It’s fun, well written, and has Dale Eaglesham artwork.
