IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ARCHIE #22
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Pete Woods
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Tragedy has descended upon one of Riverdale’s most beloved residents. This is one you’re going to want to buy, keep, and re-read over the years, because we promise it will never leave you.
STEPHEN: The shocking ending last issue, leads to a lot of tears and fond memories in this issue. There is still a shocking reveal, that you’ll have to see for yourself, but I think we can say Riverdale will never be the same… AGAIN!
BATMAN #27
Written by: Tom King
Art by: Davide Gianfelice
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITITATION: “THE WAR OF THE JOKES AND RIDDLES” part three! The war has spread to every corner of Gotham City, and while Batman battles back the forces of Joker and Riddler, an unlikely criminal becomes the pivotal key to its potential resolution… but it could cost him everything.
WAYNE: I’m really enjoying this latest storyline. I always felt the Riddler had the stuff to challenge the Joker, so I’m glad he’s getting his chance to take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Highly recommended!
BETTIE PAGE #1
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Colton Worley
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Page: $3.99
SOLICITATION: She’s more modest than Ms. Blaise, but peels more than Ms. Emma. She out-vamps Vampirella, but she’s sweeter than Honey West. She put the mod in model, and the bangs in bang-bang. Now the world can know the truth: her classified adventures back in 1951 Hollywood have been declassified. Dynamite, David Avallone and Colton Worley are proud to present The Secret Diary of Bettie Page, in handy comic book form.
STEPHEN: Yeah… I want to see how Avallone and Worley bring Bettie Page to life in comics and make it worth my while. Still any Bettie Page is better than no Bettie Page.
DAREDEVIL #24
Written by: Charles Soule
Art by: Alec Morgan
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: KINGPIN TRIES TO CRUSH MURDOCK’S “SUPREME” MOVE!
• It’s the fight of MATT MURDOCK’S life!
• KINGPIN and LEGAL on one side, the jury on the other, and DAREDEVIL caught between it all!
• And if the Daredevil survives the letter of the law, he’ll still have to deal with…TOMBSTONE!
• The penultimate issue of “SUPREME”!
WAYNE: This is THE Marvel title for me! When I saw Scott Snyder recommend this on Twitter, I jumped on immediately! Great series!
DEADPOOL KILLS MARVEL UNIVERSE AGAIN #2
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Dalibor Talajic
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Remember the time Deadpool went a little TOO crazy and killed the entire Marvel Universe? Well, this isn’t that. This is a DIFFERENT time. Writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajic (A.K.A. the creators behind DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE) have reunited for ANOTHER tale of Deadpool taking out all of your faves in the most horrific ways possible! It’s gonna hurt him more than it hurts you…and you’re gonna love it!
CHRIS: I’ve read all of the “Deadpool Kills…” titles and will continue reading them until my liver explodes. Why liver? It was the first organ that came to mind. Cullen Bunn is trying something different and this “kills” book has a way darker tone than previous installments. Especially this issue. Whoo boy…
INJUSTICE 2 #6
Written by: Tom Taylor
Art by: Mike S. Miller
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Get ready for the Origin of Supergirl! Jump back in time to see the early life of Kara Zor-el and the destruction of Krypton. Sent to Earth to be her infant cousin Kal-el’s protector, an accident delays her by decades. She’s met upon her eventual arrival by a most unexpected benefactor and learns a very different version of the story of Superman’s regime.
WAYNE: This has been a great title even in this second stage. And I’m going to be fascinated to see what this new take on Supergirl is like! Can’t wait!
SPENCER AND LOCKE #4 (OF 4)
Writer: David Pepose
Artist: Jorge Santiago, Jr.
Publisher: ACTION LAB – DANGER ZONE
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The end is nigh, as Spencer and Locke square off against Locke’s crime lord father, Augustus, with a child’s life hanging in the balance! Can Locke survive against these overwhelming odds? Does he even want to? And who killed Sophie Jenkins? Find out here in this explosive finale!
CHRIS: Take Calvin and Hobbes, make them adult detectives and turn every fun thing the two did as children into a more realistic and messed up childhood and you have Spencer and Locke. This comic is damn near genius and readers who grew up reading Calvin and Hobbes will love all the references. Last issue saw Locke running around as his “Spaceman Spiff” persona after being injected with hallucinogenic drugs. It’s going to be hard to top that.
WILD STORM #6
Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Jon Davis-Hunt
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Michael Cray, the world’s best professional killer, is going to get himself killed for refusing to assassinate an innocent. Angela Spica, whose only mistake was saving someone’s life, is discovering that her life is over forever, and that the people in this strange new world she’s forced to survive in…may not be people at all. Treaties have been breached. Secrets are being told. There’s a war coming. NOTE: THE WILD STORM will skip shipping in August and return in September!
CHRIS: One of the top DC books in terms of quality, the Wild Storm is Warren Ellis cranked up to 10. Jon Davis-Hunt delivers some extremely high quality artwork and this issue has a bunch of the classic Ellis ultra-violence.
