IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BETTY & VERONICA BY ADAM HUGHES #3
Writer: Adam Hughes
Artists: Adam Hughes, José Villarubia, Jack Morelli
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99 U.S.
SOLICITATION: All Heck breaks loose in Riverdale as the final act of BETTY VERSUS VERONICA reaches its combustible conclusion! The streets of Riverdale run red under the rockets’ red glare and no one will ever be the same!
STEPHEN: I do love me some Adam Hughes action, and with the final arc arriving this week, Betty and Veronica #3 is going to be the must have book for me from Archie Comics this week.
DARK DAYS: THE FORGE #1
Writers: James T Tynion IV, Scott Snyder
Artists: Jim Lee, Various, John Romita, Jr., Andy Kubert
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: DARKNESS COMES TO THE DC UNIVERSE WITH THE MYSTERY OF THE FORGE! Aquaman, The Flash and more of DC’s pantheon of heroes suspect Batman of hiding a dark secret that could threaten the very existence of the multiverse! It’s an epic that will span generations—but how does it connect to the origins of one of DC’s most legendary heroes?
STEPHEN: OMG! Old school comic book readers are going to think it is 1986 all over again, while those wonder what DC meant when they said there were THREE Jokers are going to flip when they read The Forge #1. This is in continuity everyone, and I think DC is about to return to greatness. Also, the Duke/Hal Jordan interactions are fantastic.
JIM BUTCHER DRESDEN FILES DOG MEN #1
Writer: Jim Butcher, Mark Powers
Artist: Diego Galindo
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Jim Butcher’s worldwide bestselling Dresden Files saga continues in this original limited series!
Harry Dresden is a man on the edge—and that is something that can be dangerous to friend and foe alike. He’s been drafted by a senior member of the White Council of Wizards to investigate a series of murders in rural Mississippi. As always, there’s more afoot than is immediately apparent. The question is, will Harry’s state of mind keep him from seeing it, and will his actions lead him into direct conflict with the wizard who’s depending on his help?
STEPHEN: I have been working my way through the Dresden Files books, and just started Changes. With only three more books left in the series, having new, original Dresden Files stories is pretty great. If you are a Dresden fan, then Dog Men is a book you’ll want to pick up this week.
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES BUGS BUNNY SPECIAL #1
Writers: Sam Humphries
Artists: Scott Hanna, Tom Grummett
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The Legion of Super-Heroes always thought they had taken their inspiration from the 21st Century’s Superboy. But when they try to bring that hero into their future time, the team discovers to their surprise the caped champion isn’t who—or even what—they expected! And the bonus Looney Tunes backup story features DC characters with story and art by Juan Ortiz!
STEPHEN: It is somewhat apropos that this issue arrives as we wrap the first run of our Legion Clubhouse podcast. I don’t know what DC has in mind with what is arguably the strangest crossovers the publisher has ever done, but this could be a lot of fun.
NORMANDY GOLD #1
Writers: Megan Abbott and Alison Gaylin
Artist: Steve Scott
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When her younger sister is found at the center of a brutal murder case, tough-as-nails Sheriff Normandy Gold is forced to dive headfirst into the seedy world of 1970s prostitution.
Written by bestselling crime fiction stalwarts Megan Abbott (You Will Know Me, Dare Me) and Alison Gaylin (What Remains Of Me, Into Darkness) with stunning artwork by Steve Scott (Batman, X-Men Forever, JLA).
STEPHEN: Titan Comics’ Hard Case Crime imprint has really impressed me. While the books aren’t for everyone – in fact most are not for the young ones at all – I enjoy seeing what else is out there beyond the Capes and Tights aisle at my LCS. Normandy Gold could be that much needed shock to the system I need to deep dive into comics. Check it out.
