The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN/THE SHADOW #1
Writer: Scott Snyder, Steve Orlando
Artist: Riley Rossmo
Publisher: DC Comics/Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Two of history’s greatest vigilantes are reunited at last! Murder has come to Gotham City, and Lamont Cranston appears to be the culprit…but he’s been dead for over fifty years! Batman will go to the ends of the Earth to unravel the mystery of Cranston’s life, but the mysterious Shadow will do everything in his power to stop him from learning too much… The superstar team of writers Scott Snyder and Steve Orlando and artist Riley Rossmo brings you a dark and twisty modern noir like nothing you’ve seen before, with a brand-new villain unlike any either hero has faced! This is the unmissable crime series of 2017, so get on board now!
MATTHEW: I still own the first Batman/Shadow crossovers from the 70s, and I really like the idea of seein’ ‘em in action together again. (Hopefully they remember who inspired whom.)
STEPHEN: You had me at B… Seriously, having Batman and The Shadow (the character that inspired the creation of Batman) together for the first time (again) is like waking up and discovering Santa is real and this is Christmas morning. Definitely a must read this week.
BEN REILLY, SCARLET SPIDER #1
Writer: Peter David
Artist: Mark Bagley
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: One of the most controversial characters in comics has returned – and the controversy has only BEGUN! In the aftermath of THE CLONE CONSPIRACY, Ben has a new take on life…and he’s not the same Scarlet Spider he was before. Come witness what will be the most talked about comic of the year!
MATTHEW: With one creator I love, this could be genius or cheese sandwich. I’ll at least give the first issue a fair shot, though I think Marvel’s courting of “controversy” is a marketing misstep…
DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE #2
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Dave Acosta
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What if volcanoes were weapons of war? What if Amelia Earhart was alive, but captive? Where is Pat Savage off to? Hey, what’s that submarine doing there? Doc Savage has questions. David Avallone and Dave Acosta provide the answers. Planes, submarines, battle cruisers, mad scientists, madcap heiresses and the Man of Bronze collide in the Pacific, in the thrilling second chapter of DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE. As an added bonus, the Brent Schoonover covers for issues 1-4 will connect to form 1 complete image!
STEPHEN: The first issue was so good. Can’t wait to open the cover and dive into this next great Doc Savage adventure from Dynamite Entertainment. While Doc and friends may not be everyone’s cup of tea, this is the closest we get to the spirit of the original pulp adventures.
FLASH #21
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Howard Porter
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE BUTTON” part two! The cataclysmic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1 continue here! The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive, the two greatest detectives on any world, unite to explore the mystery behind a certain blood-stained smiley button embedded in the Batcave wall. What starts as a simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party-and it’s not who anyone suspects! It’s a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!
MATTHEW: DC claims that this is where we find out whether the Watchmen connection is going to pan out, but didn’t we have a different Reverse-Flash in the New 52 continuity? I’m confused, but interested in finding out what the heck is going on in the state of Denmark… Errr, DC.
STEPHEN: RUN, BARRY! RUN! AND DON’T FORGET TO TAKE BATMAN WITH YOU! IT’S IMPORTANT! AND YOUR KIDS, MARTY! SOMETHING’S GOT TO BE DONE ABOUT YOUR KIDS! I’ve read the heck out of this issue, and for those wanting to see how The Button leads to the big reveal, this issue continues the story and takes it up a notch. Worth checking out.
LOBSTER JOHNSON: PIRATES GHOST #2
Writer: John Arcudi, Mike Mignola
Artist: Tonci Zonjic
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Lobster searches for a connection between a missing reporter and the appearance of a ghostly pirate ship.
STEPHEN: Again, the first issue was fantastic, which means more pulp goodness lands in our laps this week with the second issue. Great art, great story, definitely something that should be on your pull list.
