IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BRITANNIA #4
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Juan Jose Ryp
Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: Final Fates! Antonius Axia’s nightmarish journey through the heart of the remote Roman colony of Britannia has brought him to death’s door. But when the world’s first detective confronts his deepest fears about gods, men and civilization, will he be able to complete the mission given to him by Emperor Nero, or will his mind collapse under the unfathomable weight of the void that now stands revealed before him?
ETIENNE: I have stuck with this mini-series since the beginning, so I would be crazy to drop it now. I has been well worth the read, although I question how many people will have kept interest in it without my unending fascination with Roman Mythology.
CAPTAIN KID #3
Writer: Mark Waid/Tom Peyer
Artist: Wilfredo Torres
Publisher: Aftershock Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Attacked from the future! At odds with his mentor! Abducted through time! In the chaos of his centuries-long birthday, Captain Kid unearths the dangerous secret of his origin!
MATTHEW: When I heard that Waid was back with an independent comic, I was totally in, and the art on this one looks really fun. I only wish I’d heard about it back when #1 came out…
DETECTIVE COMICS #946
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Mikel Janin
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE VICTIM SYNDICATE,” part four! The Victim Syndicate is taking their message to the streets in an attempt to turn the citizens of Gotham City against Batman and his allies! They can fight villains, but what happens when the whole city turns against them?
WAYNE: This book continues to sparkle, a great among the wonderful Bat-franchise! Don’t miss it!
THE FLASH #12
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “SPEED OF DARKNESS,” part three! Time is running out for The Flash and Kid Flash as they race to help the Shade regain control of the Shadowlands, the dimension of pure darkness from which the Shade draws his terrible power, before it reaches our world and consumes the light forever.
STEPHEN: This is one of my favorite series to come out of DC’s Rebirth, and it continues to have a strong story, and interesting twists that add to The Flash continuity… that is, if continuity matters to you.
WAYNE: Another stand-out Rebirth title keeps telling great stories! Highly recommended!
HAWKEYE #1
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Leonardo Romero
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Remember Hawkeye? No not that Hawkeye, our favorite Hawkeye, the chick who puts the hawk in Hawkeye, the butt-kicking hero who had to save the other Hawkeye’s butt all the time. Yup, you know her, it’s the dazzling Kate Bishop making her solo comics debut! Kate is heading west and returning to Los Angeles, with her bow and arrow and P.I. badge in tow. There are crimes to solve and she’s the best archer to handle ’em! The City of Angels has a new guardian angel.
MATTHEW: Kate Bishop is back on the West Coast, and picking up where Clint Barton left off. Given the ‘Rockford Files’ riffs in her last solo run, this looks like it could be a lot of fun.
INHUMANS VS X-MEN #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $5.99 USD
SOLICITATION: The X-Men and Inhumans have been on a collision course since the link was proven between the Inhumans’ precious Terrigen Mist and the sickness and death of many mutants. When Beast discovers that the mutants have only two weeks before the planet is uninhabitable for them, an Inhuman/mutant war is unavoidable. Co-written by Charles Soule and Jeff Lemire, IVX delivers sensational set pieces, gargantuan grudge matches, all drawn by the sensational Leinil Francis Yu! Whether you’re for the X-MEN or the INHUMANS, IVX promises to shatter the Marvel Universe as you know it!
ETIENNE: So, with my favourite X-Man dead and my favourite X-Woman out for revenge, this series could really go either way. Then again, they teased the Cyclops-Emma missing 8 months for about 2 years, so despite the setup from Death of X, I am fully expecting them not to be mentioned at all throughout. Unlike AvX, where the wrong side won, I fully expect that Marvel will make sure this is truly the end of the X-Men in comics for the foreseeable future, that is until Fox finally give up the film rights to them and they come roaring back. So, with my luck of always supporting the losing side – Go X-Men?
RED SONJA VOL. 4 #0
Writer: Amy Chu
Artist: Carlos E. Gomez
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $0.25 USD
SOLICITATION: The barbarian She-Devil with a Sword faces a whole different world and challenges in this new adventure written by Amy Chu and drawn by Carlos Gomez. Somewhere deep underground, strange and powerful demons clad in metal armor attack and roust Red Sonja from a deep magical sleep. Confused and weaponless, she must find a way to defeat these mysterious creatures, escape from her solitary prison, and make her way to the surface to discover where she is, and why she was put there…
ETIENNE: It does make me wonder how many stories they can squeeze out of what is a very shallow premise, but I suppose I should really question why I always keep coming back to read more of her books. Dynamite has done a fantastic job with the art on these series, but occasionally the story has felt disjointed. So back with a new volume and a comic for 25¢ it’s practically a no-brainer for me to pick this up (and then again if you buy digitally like me, this comic is FREE!)
RESIDENT ALIEN #4 of 4
Writer: Peter Hogan
Artist: Steve Parkhouse
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A small-town doctor-and occasional detective-is an alien! Looking into the death of a drifter, Dr. Harry hires someone in another state to find the dead man’s family. A story arc ends, a new mystery closes, and a drug ring is shut down! Peter Hogan (Tom Strong) and Steve Parkhouse (Doctor Who) continue their celebrated character-driven series!
WAYNE: Another great miniseries in this franchise comes to an end! Can’t wait to see what happens!
THE LOST BOYS #3 (OF 6)
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Scott Godlewski
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: It’s getting to be so a guy can’t go out on a Friday night in Santa Carla without somebody trying to sink their teeth into his neck! The Blood Belles are wreaking havoc across town. The Frog Brothers are missing, Star has run away, and Sam and Michael are one step ahead of having their blood drained. Only the mysterious vamp hunter known as the Believer can help them now!
MATTHEW: I wasn’t sold on issue #1, but the revelation at the end of #2 have me hooked. It’s not the movie from which it was spawned, but it’s a fun take nonetheless…
