IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN BEYOND #1
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Bernard Chang
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE RETURN” part one! Terry McGinnis is back as Batman, much to the delight of his family and friends. But is the original Joker really back as well? Inspired by the possible return of their role model, the Jokerz have taken over an entire section of Gotham City and are determined to wreak havoc in the still-rebuilding city. While Batman battles chaos on the streets, his friend Dana is at the mercy of the new leader of the now-unified gang.
ROB: McGinnis is back! The last Batman Beyond series was a bit wonky, with putting Tim into the suit after coming back from the past. This looks more promising, but seems like a story I’ve read before. Still giving it a shot.
STEPHEN: With all of the weird, world changing events DC has been doing in the last couple of years that have screwed up the future of the DC universe, seeing Terry McGinnis back as Batman certainly has my interest. I’m picking this up because Batman (Beyond), and can’t wait to see how the new Jokerz work in the hands of Dan Jurgens.
PROWLER #1
Writer: Sean Ryan
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Even a super hero’s life can get boring. Double-check your gear. Patrol the city. Save the innocent. Report back to your boss, The Jackal. Wait, what? Why is Prowler working for The Jackal? What does the resurrected Madame Web have to do with him? And what has Prowler already done that may have compromised him?!
CHRIS: It’s about time Prowler got his own title! Wait, am I the only one that’s been saying that? Regardless, this looks like something different and is a character we haven’t seen in a while. Don’t like that the first issue is a event tie-in though…
MATTHEW: I like Hobie Brown, especially in his new role, and while I’m leery of the Clone Conspiracy, I’m eager to see what’s up his purple sleeves…
SAGA #39
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Fiona Staples
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE WAR FOR PHANG,” Part Three New allies join the battle, but so do deadly new enemies.
ROB: More characters being added to this already impressive cast. Should be interesting to see what else happens to show up.
SERENITY: NO POWER IN THE ‘VERSE #1
Writer: Chris Roberson
Artist: Karl Story
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The ‘verse is a complicated and dangerous place, and Malcolm Reynolds and his outlaw crew aboard the Serenity are ever experiencing tough times. When tensions rise among the crew, a call for help becomes a welcome interruption: they must track down a missing friend and the answers to the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
MATTHEW: Well, even though some of my fellow fans of the franchise are a little TOO into it, I’m happy to see more Serenity on the hypothetical stands.
SPOOK HOUSE #1
Writer: Eric Powell
Artist: Eric Powell
Publisher: Albatross Funnybooks
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Eric Powell presents the first issue of an all new anthology series of scary camp fire tales for kids!
MATTHEW: This looks like it could be a lotta fun..
THE X-FILES: ORIGINS #3
Writer: Jody Houser & Matthew Dow Smith
Artist: Chris Fenoglio, Corin Howell
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Before the FBI, before the X-Files, they were just two teenagers in search of the truth. On Martha’s Vineyard, a young Fox Mulder investigates something strange happening on the island, while in San Diego, 13-year-old Dana Scully looks into the shocking murder of her teacher. Two kids, two mysteries, one conspiracy that threatens the future of humanity!
STEPHEN: How weird was a young Fox Mulder? You can bet this issue gives us a look at the early years of our favorite paranormal investigators.
TMNT UNIVERSE #3
Writer: Paul Allor, Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz
Artist: Damian Couceiro, Kevin Eastman, Bill Sienkiewicz
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Cornered and injured, the Turtles have no escape from the forces aligned against them! Raphael must learn to compromise with his enemy if any are to survive!
ROB: More Turtles all the time. This series has been a solid side event to the main ongoing and hope to see both continue for some time to come.
TRANSFORMERS REVOLUTION #1
Writer: John Barber
Artist: Andrew Griffith
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THUNDERCRACKER AND BUSTER SAVE THE WORLD! A DECEPTICON who wants to be a screenwriter. A dog who wants to, I don’t know, eat stuff and chase squirrels or whatever dogs want to do. A White House under siege by DIRE WRAITHS. And the phone call that brings them all together.
• Just because OPTIMUS PRIME and SOUNDWAVE are leading the REVOLUTION doesn’t mean the rest of the TRANSFORMERS aren’t keeping busy!
CHRIS: Because IDW wants to continually make me relive my childhood, this week we get Transformers Revolution #1. It’s a tie-in to the main event, which has been a mixed bag. But, this is Transformers and there is no way I won’t read it.
WONDER WOMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1
Writer: Various
Artist: Various
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: An immense special issue celebrating seventy-five years of the Amazing Amazon, through phenomenal new stories, art, and stand-alone illustrations! Featuring a roster of incredible creators-some who’ve laid down legendary runs with the character, and some who’ve never drawn her before-including Rafael Albuquerque, Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Renae De Liz, Brenden Fletcher, Adam Hughes, Karl Kerschl, Gail Simone, and many, many more to be announced!
CHRIS: Everyone should celebrate Wonder Woman’s 75th birthday and grab this. She deserves more love than she gets and this one has some creative talent that just may make this worth the heavy cover price.
STEPHEN: Wonder Woman is 75, and for comic characters – especially a female comic book character – this is a big deal. Pick it up, enjoy the love, and mark this in your memory so decades from now you can still say, “I remember when Wonder Woman turned 75.”
