IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL STAR BATMAN #3
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr., Declan Shalvey
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “MY OWN WORST ENEMY” part three! Now on the run from both bounty hunters and cops, Batman and Duke must find a safe place to hide out with Two-Face before they can continue their journey to the cure. Batman might soon realize his worst nightmare: that Two-Face is right…and nowhere is safe.
JON: If you’re looking for something that’s fast-paced and action-packed, look no further. All Star Batman is a non-stop adrenaline rush of a book thanks to Scott Snyder. JRJR’s art is often divisive, but it certainly pairs well with this story. I highly recommend picking up this issue.
WAYNE: Batman outside of Gotham City is quite an event, and this team is having a great time on this “road trip.” Can’t wait!
BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #3
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Tomm Coker
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “A FULL CONFESSION” Solve one murder, uncover thousands.
CHRIS: Black Monday Murders is Hickman cranked to 11. Cryptic symbols, mystery, and extremely detailed storytelling are all in Black Monday Murders. Plus, who doesn’t like to think that Wall Street is some evil Free Mason-like cult?
BRITANNIA #2
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Juan Jose Ryp
Publisher: Valliant Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: Duty has led to darkness… Dispatched to the remote outpost of Britannia by Rome’s highest power, the ancient world’s first detective – veteran legionnaire Antonius Axia – has found himself on a horrifying journey that will challenge everything he knows about death, destiny, and the limits of reality itself. But in this wild and pagan land, far removed from Nero’s control and influence, how will he grapple with the witches, demons and deities that lurk just out of sight? These are aberrations beyond the comprehension of a citizen of history’s most civilized empire
ETIENNE: I reviewed the first issue of this series a few weeks back, and I am most certainly hooked. The art was fantastic, the story both interesting and twisted and the villains truly despicable. I am hoping for more of the same, with the exception of perhaps a little less incest.
CLONE CONSPIRACY #1
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Jim Cheung
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “DEAD NO MORE”: The Jackal is back and has conquered death. The Amazing Spider-Man is outmatched by his classic enemy’s army. Does the wall-crawler stand a chance? SHOULD he stand in The Jackal’s way if he’s found the key to eternal life?
RATED T+
JON: With all the hype this mini-series has generated since it was first teased early this year, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give issue #1 a shot. Say what you will about Dan Slott, but the man knows how to write Spider-Man. That, coupled with the fact that Jim Cheung is on art, is certainly reason enough to pick up this book.
DETECTIVE COMICS #942
Writer: James Tynion IV, Steve Orlando
Artist: Andy MacDonald
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “NIGHT OF THE MONSTER MEN” part six! The earth-shaking finale is here! Batman’s going one-on-one with Hugo Strange, the mastermind behind the beasts unleashed on Gotham…but the biggest and most dangerous of all the monsters was saved for last! What will the Bat-Family have to sacrifice to bring it down? And what’s the strange secret behind Hugo’s design?
JON: What started off feeling like a self-contained event is now starting to tie more and more into the previous Bat-title arcs. Steve Orlando has been doing an incredible job using this crossover to set up the next arcs for the respective titles, and I’m certain the conclusion will make the whole event worthwhile.
WAYNE: It’s been a good event, will be very curious to see how this concludes!
DIRK GENTLY: SALMON OF DOUBT #1
Writer: Arvind Ethan David
Artist: Ilias Kyriazis
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Plagued by nightmares about a childhood he never had, Dirk returns to Cambridge University to seek the advice of his former tutor, the time-traveling Professor Reg Chronotis. There he discovers that a holistic detective can have more than one past, and his adventures have only just begun…
MATTHEW: One of the names associated with the television show makes me very leery, but I’m still interested in seeing where this version of Dirk ends up going…
STEPHEN: This is a no-brainer. Grab this book.
DOOM PATROL #2
Writer: Gerard Way
Artist: Nick Derington
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What happened to Larry Trainor? The hero known as Negative Man is still out there, but he’s not exactly the same guy he was back when Doom Patrol was still together. Like a Russian doll, there is man inside the man, and who knows how many other men inside of them, with the guy on top possessing a mind for mischief that incites violence. Meanwhile, Casey has started rebuilding Robotman, even though she still doesn’t know exactly how Cliff Steele ended up crossing her path in the first place.
CHRIS: Man the first issue was so good. And bizarre. And confusing. All the things I want out of my Doom Patrol comic. Hoping issue two lives up to my expectations.
FLASH #8
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE” part eight! When Godspeed brings his killing spree to Iron Heights, Barry Allen must protect his own Rogues Gallery-including his mother’s killer-from the deadly speedster! Luckily, The Flash has some help from Wally West, the newly christened Kid Flash!
WAYNE: I haven’t been this engaged in the Flash for some time, so I’m really liking what’s happening here! Great title!
GREAT LAKES AVENGERS #1
Writer: Zac Gorman
Artist: Will Robson
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “All New, All Different?” No, thank you! New things are bad and different things are scary! Instead, why not join everybody’s least favorite super-hero team, the Great Lakes Avengers in their brand new – but not too brand new – ongoing series, Same Old, Same Old, Great Lakes Avengers! When the team gets reinstated as permanent members of the Avengers and uprooted to Detroit, the GLA has one more shot at super hero glory…but can they answer the call? Do they even have 4G coverage here? Find out!
CHRIS: What’s this? Do my eyes deceive me? The Great Lakes Avengers have a new comic?! It’s almost as if someone said: “You know, no one has made a book for Wilson that has a bunch of obscure characters. Lets bring back Great Lakes Avengers.” The only person that could be more pumped for this than me is Matthew.
HOWARD THE DUCK #11
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Joe Quinones
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • Join Chip (Zdarsky) and Joe (Quinones) as they say goodbye to Howard in a Very Special Issue that is still priced as a Regular Issue!
• Can Howard outwit fate? Can any of us? Or is the concept of predestination just shorthand for the near-infinite factors in play that are guided, at their core, by free will?
MATTHEW: Chip & Joe wrap up the duck. Will Howard ever be the same?
Yeah, probably. But I still wanna see what they’ve got up their sleeve for their final issue…
LOST BOYS #1
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Scott Godlewski
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Santa Carla, California is on edge. The eccentric coastal town and haven for the undead was finally returning to “normal” after its last supernatural scuffle left the local coven’s head vampire dead and gave newcomers Michael and Sam Emerson a housewarming both violent and bizarre. Now the brothers must once again team up with militant vampire hunters Edgar and Allan Frog when a new gang of ruthless, stunning, life-sucking nightcrawlers known as the Blood Belles emerges from the aftermath to collect Michael’s love interest and their lost sister, Star.
MATTHEW: Can 1987 really make its comeback????
No idea, but the ghost of my mullet and I will be reading to see how it all goes.
REBORN #1
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Greg Capullo
Publisher: Image
Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: Mark Millar & Greg Capullo join forces to create the smash hit sci-fi / fantasy story of the year: REBORN. Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you-the good and the bad.
ETIENNE: I love comics that go under my radar until the day of release and this is one that I completely missed and really want to pick up. Mark Millar and Greg Capullo would normally be enough to grab my attention, but I love stories about life after death and the mystery of existence. This could obviously be a big disappointment, but that is half the fun of buying comics on a gut feeling, the excitement of finding out if it was really worth your time.
WARHAMMER 40,000 WILL OF IRON #1
Writer: George Mann
Artist: Tazio Bettin
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: After a thousand years, violent warp storms have receded from the Calaphrax Cluster, and an ancient battlefront in the war against Chaos has again been opened to the universe. Now, multiple forces risk complete immolation to attack the sector – drawn by the lure of ancient relics, lost knowledge, and powerful megaweapons, buried for aeons. Chief among those forces, the fearsome Dark Angels, emerald-armored Space Marines, shock-troopers of the Emperor’s Imperium and indomitable defenders of humanity. But Chaos stirs in the warp, and the Dark Angels will not be alone for long! Based in the universe of the ever-popular miniatures game, novels, and videogames, this new ongoing series is perfect for both the hardcore Warhammer 40,000 fan and the complete newcomer!
ETIENNE: I remember back in the early 00’s when Games Workshop had their own Inferno comic book line. It was terrible, UK, black and white trash that only lasted as long as it did because it was pushed on an unsuspecting captive audience in their 100’s of stores. However their universe is so in depth and so vast that there is bound to be limitless good stories and wonderful comics that can be made in it. I got the free #0 issue of this series last week and if that is a good indication as to the quality of this 4 issue series, then count me in for all of it.
