The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ANGEL CITY #1
Writer: Janet Harvey
Artist: Megan Levens
Publisher: Oni Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Introducing ANGEL CITY, a hard-boiled 1930s noir starring Dolores Dare, previous Hollywood hopeful and current enforcer for the Volante mob. When her best friend turns up dead in a dumpster behind the Chinese Theater, Dolores starts her own investigation of the “April Fool’s Killer.” As she gets closer to the truth, the studios, the corrupt homicide division, and even her own gangland contacts work to cover up the scandal. Has she bitten off more than she can chew?
STEPHEN: Hard boiled crime comics? More please!
AQUAMAN #8
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Scot Eaton, Wayne Faucher
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “UNSTOPPABLE” part one! Arthur’s investigation into the mysterious Atlantean terrorist attacks on the surface is cut short when Black Manta taps his newfound weapons cache and unleashes an unstoppable weapon upon the undersea kingdom: a relentless behemoth from the deep that lays waste to anything in its path.
JON: Aquaman has been by far one of my favorite titles to come out of Rebirth. I can’t say enough good things about Dan Abnett’s storytelling and despite having multiple artists, the visuals are always solid. If you haven’t been reading Aquaman yet, I suggest you start.
BATMAN #8
Writer: Tom King, Steve Orlando
Artist: Riley Rossmo
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “NIGHT OF THE MONSTER MEN” part four! The giant monsters might be bad, but Gotham’s heroes encounter a whole new threat level when two of their own start terrorizing the city! Batman must face the horrifying possibility of losing two of his closest allies to Hugo Strange’s vicious attack.
JON: I’m very curious to see how the fallout from Detective Comics #941 plays out in part four of the “Night of the Monster Men” crossover. Orlando’s delivered a solid story so far and Rossmo’s art didn’t disappoint in Batman #7, so I would recommend giving this issue a shot.
CAGE #1 (OF 4) NOW

Artist: Genndy Tartakovsky
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99

But in the heart of the city, the world’s hardest-working, smack-talking, chain-wearing super hero is on the street and on the case! And his rates are reasonable! He’s CAGE! and he’ll save your behind. Dig it!
ROB: OMG!! From one of the greatest creative minds of our time! I have been excited about this since the announcement and nothing is stopping me from owning this book.
DEATH OF X #1
Writer: Charles Soule and Jeff Lemire
Artist: Aaron N. Kuder
Publisher: Marvel
Cover Price: $4.99 USD
SOLICITATION: What happened eight months ago that set the Inhumans and X-Men on a collision course? Find out here! The Inhumans travel to Japan where one of the Terrigen Clouds creates a shocking new Inhuman. The X-Men travel to Muir Island where the second Terrigen Cloud causes something truly terrible. When these two events collide, a war of catastrophic proportions explodes.
ETIENNE: If there was a book I have been waiting for to reignite my interest in Marvel, then this is it. Secret Wars seemed to utterly eradicate ‘my’ X-Men and finally I get to see what the heck happened to them. Then again, ‘Death of X’ really makes me think that I was better off not knowing…
DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS #5
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Nelson Daniel
Publisher: IDW
Cover Price: $3.99 USD
SOLICITATION: This is it; Count Strahd Von Zarovich versus the Baldur’s Gate heroes! Even if they survive, how can they escape the clutches of the Realm of Dread? Jim Zub (Wayward, Samurai Jack) delivers an action-packed D&D story set in the fan-favourite Ravenloft setting. Featuring characters from the ‘Curse of Strahd’ Ravenloft adventure for Dungeons & Dragons. Misc and Boo are cult favourite characters from the best-selling Baldur’s Gate video game series which has sold millions of copies around the world.
ETIENNE: Misc and Boo. In Ravenloft. Seriously I do not care how bad this book is (but I hope it’s good!) but just that idea is making me rush out and get this. I remember all those long hours playing Baldurs Gate back in the 90’s, trying to take Boo away from Misc on his character sheet and watching him get annoyed with me; and then I would kill his girlfriend and he would leave the party in a sulk and kill my entire team in a blood thirsty rage…
FUTURE QUEST #5
Writer: Jeff Parker
Artist: Evan Shaner
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Team Quest is dealt a serious blow at the hands of FEAR just as Omnikron starts rebuilding itself on Earth – out of anything living that comes too close! Inter-Nation’s Deva Sumadi takes charge and splits the group up to go recruit more forces to take on the alien supercreature. It’s time to go on tour with The Impossibles and meet the biggest fighting force in the world, Frankenstein, Jr.!
MATTHEW: This book has been loads of fun to read and beautiful to look at, and I hope it spins off more H-B action hero books in its wake…
JESSICA JONES #1
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Michael Gaydos
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: She is back after a decade! A lot has changed in the Marvel Universe and there are still many secrets hiding in the shadows. Secrets only a special woman like Jessica Jones can hope to uncover. Discover the haunting secrets from Jessica’s past in this blistering new series. Alias Investigations is open for business.
MATTHEW: Once again, Marvel is about six months behind the new hotness, which means tie-in material! All kidding aside, the first volume of Jessica’s book was pretty amazing, and I always like Bendis better on characters that he created…
JUSTICE LEAGUE #6
Writer: Bryan Hitch
Artist: Matthew Clark, Sean Parsons
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “STATE OF FEAR” part one! Following a harrowing battle with a monster from beyond the stars, Green Lantern Jessica Cruz decides to unwind by taking on another unbelievable challenge: overcoming her anxiety and asking The Flash out on a date!
JON: While the first post-Rebirth arc of Justice League wasn’t the strongest, I’m eager to see where Bryan Hitch goes with this next chapter. It is a new arc, so it makes for a great jumping-on point if you haven’t given the series a chance yet.
MOONSHINE #1
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Eduardo Risso
Publisher: Image Comics
SOLICITATION: Set during Prohibition, and deep in the backwoods of Appalachia, MOONSHINE #1 tells the story of Lou Pirlo, a city-slick “torpedo” sent from New York City to negotiate a deal with the best moonshiner in West Virginia, one Hiram Holt. What Lou doesn’t figure on is that Holt is just as cunning and ruthless as any NYC crime boss. Because not only will Holt do anything to protect his illicit booze operation, he’ll stop at nothing to protect a much darker family secret…a bloody, supernatural secret that must never see the light of day… or better still, the light of the full moon.
STEPHEN: Prohibition horror? Werewolves? Brian Azzarello? SOLD!
RED ONE #4
Writer: Xavier Dorison
Artist: Terry and Rachel Dodson
Publisher: Image
Cover Price: $2.99 USD
SOLICITATION: Red One continues in ‘Undercover Part Two.’ Kremlin Elite Agent Vera Yelnikov carries out her mission of becoming the new darling of America-as the superhero, Red One. But how does one become an American Superhero? Russlan has some ideas, but Vera has something else in mind: in her undercover role as assistant to Director Lew Garner, to help make the film The Farm X!
ETIENNE: This is still one of the best looking comics around, or for that matter, ever. Seeing as I was forced to wait about 9 months for #3, to find #4 only a few weeks later is a great relief. I really hope they can get these coming out a bit more frequently, but with star artists on board their own pet project, delays are often the name of the game.
RISE OF THE BLACK FLAME #2
Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson
Artist: Christopher Mitten
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
SOLICITATION: Rumors of the Black Flame cult practicing human sacrifice lead downriver and deep into the jungle, while the group’s guide is plagued by dreams of a dark goddess.
STEPHEN: I really got a kick out of the first issue, and if I’m reading the signs correctly, we’re going to end up with a turn of the century B.P.R.D. series out of this. (Here’s hoping).
SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL #1
Writer: Cecil Castellucci
Artist: Marley Zarcone
Publisher: DC Comics/Vertigo
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There’s no such thing as a little bit of madness.
Far away on the planet Meta, Loma’s going nowhere fast. She’s dropped out of school, dumped her boyfriend, and is bored out of her mind. She longs to feel things. That’s where her idol, the lunatic poet Rac Shade, and his infamous madness coat come it. Loma steals the garment and makes a break across galaxies to take up residence in a new body: Earth girl Megan Boyer. Surely everything will be better on this passionate primitive planet with a dash of madness on her side and this human girl’s easy life. Only now that she’s here, Loma discovers being a teenaged Earth girl comes with its own challenges and Earth may not be everything she thought it’d be. Megan Boyer was a bully whom everyone was glad was almost dead, and now Loma has to survive High School and navigate the consequences of the life she didn’t live with the ever-growing and uncontrollable madness at her side. Not to mention that there are people back on her homeworld who might just want Shade’s coat back.
MATTHEW: A return to the wackiness of 90s Vertigo titles? Yes, please!
ROB: This one sold me on the title alone. I’m not very familiar with the past of the character, but this new premise seems like it could be very interesting. Let’s give it a shot.
TMNT UNIVERSE #2
Writer: Paul Allor, Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz
Artist: Damian Couceiro, Bill Sienkiewicz
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The Turtles are trapped and surrounded by the government. With them? One of their least favorite people in the world, Baxter Stockman! Will the unlikely allies find a way to work together and live to fight another day?
ROB: Is it any surprise I’m choosing a TMNT comic at this point? Seriously, this franchise just keeps getting better and I’m always happy for more.
TRIGGERMAN #1
Writer:: Walter Hill, Matz
Artist: Jef
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Locked up for a life of murder, Roy Nash never thought he’d walk the mean streets of Chicago again… let alone rescue his beloved, Lena. But when the city’s Mafia elite spring the notorious gun-for-hire to handle one last assignment, Roy once again finds himself thrown headfirst into a life of bloodshed and bullets as he sprints a breathless race to save the girl he left behind.
From legendary screenwriter and director Walter Hill (The Warriors, Red Heat, Last Man Standing) and French comics Matz, comes this hardboiled crime thriller set in the bullet-ridden streets of 1930s Chicago.
STEPHEN: Over the last couple of years, I’ve really taken to the noir crime comics by other publishers, so when a new one pops up on the weekly comic list, I’m always willing to give it a chance.
