The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL STAR BATMAN #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “My Own Worst Enemy” part one! Superstar writer Scott Snyder explodes into an all-new Batman series alongside legendary artist John Romita Jr., reimagining some of the Dark Knight’s greatest villains. First up: Two-Face! Batman must take Two-Face to a destination out of Gotham City, but the duplicitous villain has a two of spades up his sleeve. Every assassin, bounty hunter and ordinary citizen with something to hide is on their tails with one goal: kill Batman! Handcuffed together on the road to hell, this is Batman and Two-Face as you’ve never seen them before!
CHRIS: Really looking forward to Snyder writing some Batman and seeing his take on my favorite Batman villian: Two-Face! I’m not too keen on JRJR’s artwork but I’m willing to make an exception for this story that sounds a bit bonkers. Good for DC at holding the line at $2.99…oh, wait…
JON: I love Scott Snyder. I love John Romita Jr. I love Batman… need I say more?
STEPHEN: I love Snyder’s run on Batman, so as you might expect, I’m picking this first issue up as well. I have a lot of high hopes for this, and I hope the Snyder magic continues in this series.
WAYNE: No other comics required this week! THIS IS IT!
THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Tomm Coker
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: “MAMMON” ALL HAIL GOD MONEY! From JONATHAN HICKMAN (EAST OF WEST, Secret Wars, Avengers) and TOMM COKER (UNDYING LOVE) comes a new crypto-noir series about the power of dirty, filthy money… and exactly what kind of people you can buy with it. THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS is classic occultism where the various schools of magic are actually clandestine banking cartels who control all of society: a secret world where vampire Russian oligarchs, Black popes, enchanted American aristocrats, and hitmen from the International Monetary Fund work together to keep ALL OF US in our proper place.
RODRIGO: Secret society magical mystery stuff has been done before, but this looks like a good take on the genre.
DETECTIVE COMICS #938
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Alvaro Martinez
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Rise of the Batmen” part five! Batman, Batwoman, and the entire team take the fight to the deadly Colony! Those highly trained operatives took the Bat-team apart on their own turf…so how will they fare when the Colony is in its element, with all their weapons trained on our heroes?
JON: The last issue of Detective Comics was one of the best Batman books I’ve read in a long time and I’m very excited to see the full team finally come together in their first real battle. Tynion is doing a phenomenal job on this book and Martinez’s art is stunning so I highly recommend picking this up.
WAYNE: So happily surprised by this title! Keep it up!
FLASH #4
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Neil Googe
Cover Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Lightning Strikes Twice,” Chapter Three: In issue #3, dozens of innocent people mysteriously gain super-speed! But not all are heroic, and it’ll take everything The Flash and August have to harness the lightning before Black Hole does.
STEPHEN: So. Many. Flashes. Who is Godspeed? I hope this doesn’t turn into Zoom 2.0, but until the big reveal occurs, I’m on board.
WAYNE: Where no Flash has gone before! Enjoying this book immensely!
FLINTSTONES #2
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Pugh
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Bone Depot, Tarpit, and other big box stores get Bedrock whipped into a buying frenzy while Fred gets trapped in a vitamin pill scam. Plus, Fred and Wilma experience a crisis of faith when they discover the bird god they worship also makes a great record player needle.
CHRIS: The first issue was so insanely good I’m dying to read issue 2. I’m hoping it wasn’t a fluke but since I’ve enjoyed much of Mark Russell’s work, I’m not too worried about it. Don’t let the Flintstones name fool you, this book has some subtle adult humor that is biting with satire.
HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1952 TPB
Writer: Mike Mignola, John Arcudi
Artist: Alex Maleev
Publisher: Darkhorse Comics
Cover Price: $19.99
SOLICITATION: Hellboy’s first mission!
A bizarre series of murders and rumors of something worse lead Professor Bruttenholm to send a young Hellboy to a Brazilian village on his first mission. Hellboy and a small group of agents uncover something terrible in the shadows of a sixteenth-century Portuguese fortress . . . Collects the five-issue miniseries.
RODRIGO: I enjoyed this series, so I’m planning on putting my money where my mouth is (since I read it in the free PDFs Darkhorse sends us) and pick this up as soon as I got some spare cash.
NEW SUPER MAN #2
Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Richard Friend
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Made in China” part two! The New Super-Man must face off against the Justice League of China? When Kenan Kong was imbued with the powers of Superman, he didn’t waste any time using them! Now it’s up to the New Bat-Man and New Wonder-Woman of his home country to bring our hero back down to earth-just in time to stop the attack of the deadly Sunbeam!
CHRIS: Not many read the first issue but I highly recommend that everyone does. This book is brimming with some cool ideas and I’m foaming at the mouth to see a Chinease Justice League. Another book that needs to be supported!
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #1
Writer: Scott Lobdell
Artist: Dexter Soy
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Dark Trinity” part one! When a turf war puts Black Mask in Red Hood’s crosshairs, Jason discovers that the False Face Society is not what it seems, and that the organization is about to auction off a powerful weapon. As criminals from all over the globe descend on Gotham City, Jason must prove that he belongs amongst the city’s worst in order to gain access to this Dark Summit!
JON: The only reason I picked up the Red Hood and the Outlaws Rebirth issue was because I’m buying all of the one-shots but I found myself genuinely enjoying the issue. That being said, I’m giving issue #1 a shot to see if it Scott Lobdell can keep me hooked into this title. If nothing else, Dexter Soy’s art is worth the cost of admission.
NVRLND
Writer: Dylan Mulick, Stephanie Salyers
Artist: Leila Leiz
Publisher: 451 Media Group
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: NVRLND is a dark and magical retelling of Peter Pan set in the present-day landscape of Hollywood. Wallflower turned wild-child Wendy Darling befriends the fierce Tiger Lily and falls into the music rave scene of the underground club NVRLND. Intoxicated by the music, Wendy falls for the enigmatic Peter, lead singer of the band The Lost Boys. Peter is everything a girl could desire: handsome, daring, and reckless. Wendy discoveres Peter is mixed up with the mysterious tattoo artist James Hook, who preys upon the young who flock to Peter, “hooking” them on the new designer drug, Pixie Dust. You think you may know the truth about NVRLND, but the truth is, you know nothing. NVRLND is a story for anyone who never wants to give up, but may not live long enough to have a chance.
RODRIGO: This sounds pretty bad. Definitely going to check it out.
