IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BALTIMORE: EMPTY GRAVES #5
Writer: Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden
Artist: Peter Bergting
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After the Blood-Red Witch disappears with Baltimore, Sofia and the others must fend off her followers while Rose and Kidd follow a new lead to find the witch and save Baltimore.
STEPHEN: The world is coming to an end in this week’s Baltimore: Empty Graves #5, and the ending is shocking, but has an element of hope for the next series Dark Horse will release. Definitely a must read for Mike Mignola fans.
BATMAN #4
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I Am Gotham” part four. When Gotham City falls prey to true evil, will Batman be abandoned by the new heroes Gotham and Gotham Girl? The Dark Knight must decide who to entrust with the safety of his beloved city if he hopes for any of its citizens to survive.
JON: Tom King’s first official arc on Batman is really picking up steam and David Finch’s art hasn’t looked this good in years. If you’re not already picking up this title, I highly recommend giving it a shot.
STEPHEN: This story continues to build, and grow more interesting with each issue. If you haven’t picked up the series yet, the bi-weekly release schedule will quickly put you way behind, so pick it up today!
INDIE COMICS #1
Writer: Rick Bonn, Terry Cronin, Paul Bradford, Brad Olrich, Michael Carr, Gary Scott Beatty
Artist: Chris Herndon, Julia Lichty, Randy Valiente, Brad Olrich, Brad Atkins, Gary Scott Beatty
Publisher: Aazurn Publishing
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The adventure begins when Rick Bonn asks “Why Did the Caveman Cross the Sea?” Brad Olrich’s mercenaries attempt a raid on Rectory VII, “At Galaxy’s Core.” Terry Cronin plunges three college students on spring break into an underground world of bloodsucking women. Gary Scott Beatty follows The Maketch Girl and elder gods into darkness. Michael R. Carr presents two aging adversaries converging for a final encounter. And diesel punk meets modern world in Paul Bradford’s “The Night Errant!”
MATTHEW: I love a good anthology comic, even if the market seems not to, and this one has a lot of interesting stuff in the preview…
JUSTICE LEAGUE #2
Writer: Bryan Hitch
Artist: Sandu Florea
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The Extinction Machine” part two! Massive earthquakes shake cities to the ground as the ancient intelligence known as the Awakened takes control of the people of Earth, forcing them to turn against anyone with superpowers-including the Justice League! Unable to fight a war on two fronts, Batman asks for help from the one man he trusts less than anyone.
JON: After a shaky start with the Rebirth one-shot, I was pleasantly surprised by issue #1 of Justice League. Bryan Hitch focusing strictly on writing, along with some solid art by Sandu Florea, makes this a title definitely worth checking out.
MYCROFT #1
Writer: Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Raymod Obstfeld
Artist: Joshua Cassara
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Basketball legend, novelist, and superstar polymath Kareem Abdul-Jabbar brings his take on Sherlock Holmes’ older brother to comics at last! An all-new adventure set in the world of the bestselling Mycroft novel, The Apocalypse Handbook sees the diffident, brilliant Mycroft pulled into a globe-spanning adventure at the behest of Queen Victoria and a secret organization at the heart of the British government. A madman is on the loose with civilization-destroying weapons, each two hundred years in advance of the status quo. Can the smartest man in England set aside his idle, womanizing ways for long enough to track down the foe that may be his match?
MATTHEW: There’s a lot to unpack here, and I hope it’s good. (This week’s Dueling Review will have the whole story.)
STEPHEN: If you have any doubt that Kareem Abdul Jabbar can spin a great tale, then you need to get Mycroft #1 this week. This is gonna be a fun one.
SUICIDE SQUAD REBIRTH #1
Writer: Rob Williams
Artist: Philip Tan
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Soldier. War hero. Traitor. Captain Rick Flag was one of America’s greatest military commanders before he was banished to a secret military prison. But after years of isolation, Flag’s life changes forever when a woman called Amanda Waller offers him redemption in exchange for taking on the single most dangerous job in the entire DC Universe: keeping the Suicide Squad alive!
JON: With the movie just days away from release, DC is smart to capitalize on the timing of the release of the Suicide Squad Rebirth one-shot. I’m curious to see if the book is designed more for new readers who may have just seen the movie, long-time readers, or preferably both.
TORCHWOOD #1
Writer: John Barrowman, Carol Barrowman
Artist: Antonio Fuso, Pasquale Qualano
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Torchwood is Back, in an all-new ongoing comics series written by Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman! Captain Jack Harkness is back in Cardiff, and there’s only one person he can turn to, the last person who expected to see him, Gwen Cooper! On the road, on the run, and under fire, can the pair put aside their differences and rebuild the heart of Torchwood, before its flame is stamped out forever? Even better, the new comics series is in continuity with the amazing new Torchwood audio dramas from Big Finish; join us both for the official continuation of the Torchwood saga!
MATTHEW: It’s been a while since we had new Torchwood, and I recall it ending pretty badly… I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes (and where it picks up.)
