IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALL NEW INHUMANS #9
Writer: James Asmus
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Gorgon stands trial! What crime could Gorgon have committed to land him in an Inhuman jail? And what does Ana Kravinoff have to do with it all?
ROB: Been enjoying this book. Mostly as something unrelated to a lot of the rest of the Marvel Universe and getting to see characters I’d never really interacted with before. It’s a good leave from the current MU.
BATMAN #3
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I AM GOTHAM” Chapter Three: Batman and Gotham strike out together to get to the bottom of the mysterious attacks against the city. Could this novel and headstrong new hero be everything Gotham City needs…at the cost of the Dark Knight?
JON: Tom King is an incredible talent and when you throw him in the mix with my all-time favorite superhero, there’s no doubt that this book would be one of my picks of the week!
STEPHEN: I’m back on the Batman bandwagon! The Bat-Wagon! I really want to see how Gotham and Gotham Girl play out in the bigger story going on in the DCU, and I can’t wait to see how/if it ties into the whole Watchmen subplot. Definitely worth picking up this week!
WAYNE: The second issue I definitely liked better than the first, so I’m happy to continue on with this interesting story. Still great days for the Dark Knight in Batman!
BLACK HAMMER #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dean Ormston
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Once they were heroes, but that age has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City—Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien—now lead simple lives in a timeless farming town. Even as they try to find their way home, trouble has a unique way of finding heroes wherever they are!
STEPHEN: This issue is just intriguing enough that I want to see what happens next. It is a well written tale of superheroes lost, but there is something darker, and perhaps more sinister just under the surface. Definitely worth checking out this week.
GREEN ARROW #3
Writer: Ben Percy
Artist: Juan Ferreyra
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “THE DEATH AND LIFE OF OLIVER QUEEN” Chapter Three: In #3, Green Arrow’s enemies learn he is still alive when the Emerald Archer-now Emerald Outlaw-breaks into Queen Industries to learn why his entire world has betrayed him. But the deadly assassin Shado-formerly Oliver’s ally-is dispatched to finish him before he gets too close to the shocking truth behind his fall from grace.
JON: This has been the best Green Arrow we’ve gotten in years. Ben Percy has been on a roll and although I’ve loved Otto Schmidt’s art, I’m eager to see Juan Ferreyra step up to the plate on this issue.
GREEN LANTERNS #3
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Jay Leisten
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “RAGE PLANET” Chapter Three: In issue #3, Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz are trapped in the bloody and monstrous Rage Tower with their rings drained. Now, they must work together if they’re going to escape. Can the new protectors of Earth find common ground-or are they doomed to give in to the anger that’s growing between them?
JON: Ever since the Green Lanterns Rebirth one-shot, I’ve been hooked on this title. The dynamic between Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz is great and I can’t wait to see how their partnership continues to develop.
HUCK TPB
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Rafael Albuquerqie
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $14.99
SOLICITATION: In a quiet seaside town, a gas station clerk named Huck secretly uses his special gifts to do a good deed each day. When his story leaks, a media firestorm erupts, bringing him uninvited fame. As pieces of Huck’s past begin to resurface, it’s no longer clear who his friends are-or whose lives may be in danger. Collects HUCK #1-6
WAYNE: I was surprised how much I enjoyed this different take on Superman. Lots of twists and turns, a clear updating on the Man of Steel for today’s readers. Highly recommended!
JIM BUTCHER DRESDEN FILES WILD CARD #4
Writer: Jim Butcher, Mark Powers
Artist: Sean Izaakse
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITITATION: The major factions of Chicago-the police, the White Court of Vampires, and “Gentleman” Johnny Marcone’s underworld network-are officially at war! At the heart of the conflict is the malevolent, psychotic Puck. Why he’s turned these forces against each other is a mystery. A bigger one is how Harry is going to track him down and defeat him while his city is engulfed in violence. Seeking the help of an even more powerful entity may be his only choice…
WAYNE: Okay, I can make it to the next Dresden novel as long as they comic miniseries’ keep coming out! Great reading, very true to the books! If you love the novels, get the comics! Really!
SPIDER-MAN #6
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist:
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN! Miles Morales has only been in the Marvel Universe for a few weeks, and he’s already finding himself in the middle of a war. Which side will Miles choose?!
ROB: So, he’s dealt with some classic villains, now how will he deal with the classic heroes? This is the point we figure out who Marvel is making the bad guy, right? I mean Spidey was the conscious last time.
SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL #7
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Scott Koblish
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the Deadpool tradition, we present a “lost” issue of the Amazing Spider-Man! Flashback to the swinging ‘60s for one of Deadpool & Spidey’s earliest meetings! Don’t be a flake – beat feet to your shop and order now! This issue is a real solid gas!
ROB: I love Deadpool traditions, especially this one. Getting to see Deadpool in a “classic” setting is usually reason alone to pick up a book. This should be a rather entertaining issue.
WEIRD DETECTIVE #2
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Artist: Guiu Vilanova
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Det. Sebastian Greene is on the case to capture the Lovecraftian monster leaving the empty skins of human victims all over New York City and uncover its connection to a blasphemous crime family. At the same time, his partner, Det. Sana Fayez, tries to uncover Greene’s sanity-blasting secret, but can her mind survive learning the weird detective’s true identity?
STEPHEN: Cthulu Mythos meets hard boiled detective tale? Yes, please.
