Con Man is a comedy about the star of a canceled-too-soon sci-fi series hitting the convention circuit, while Spectrum is that show-within-a-show, now being told for the first time in comics as a sincere hard sci-fi epic. In #1, the action heats up as we move past the prologue stuff and get right into the thick of chaotic inter-species war, aerial dogfights, mysterious arm-wrestling aliens, and a couple dashing heroes. After last issue’s surprise attack, Earth is basically finished. Hotshot pilot Cash Wayne (Tudyk) holds the line long enough for Captain Raaker (Fillion) to show up. Then they fight, reconcile, and team up (as heroes do when they meet in comics). The next mission is to somehow get off-planet with the other survivors in one piece.
