IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BATMAN #2
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “I AM GOTHAM” Chapter Two: In issue #2, after a brush with disaster, Batman struggles to reconcile the fate he could be leaving behind for his city, and reaches out to the idealistic new hero, Gotham. But an evil is building that may overcome both Batman and his new ally.
JON: After the climactic ending to the last issue of Batman, I’m curious to see how Gotham and Gotham Girl factor into the Dark Knight’s new status quo. I’m not crazy about the concept, but issue #1 was great and nearly everything Tom King touches seems to turn to gold so I’ll gladly come along for the ride.
STEPHEN: It’s Batman, so why wouldn’t you want to read this book? Pick it up, the new run will more than likely go down as a great one from King and Finch.
WAYNE: I had some concerns about Batman’s characterization in the debut issue, but I’m hoping this book will continue to be a must-buy for me! Looks great, anyway!
FLINTSTONES #1
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Pugh
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Welcome to Bedrock, where Paleolithic humans head to dinner for a taste of artisanal mammoth after shopping at Neandertall & Big Men’s Clothing, where Wilma shows her modern art, and where, if you take a plane, you could literally end up sitting ON the tail section. Join Fred and Barney as Mister Slate sends them on a mission to show some Neanderthals a night on the town in hopes of luring them into this new system called “working for a living.” In Slate’s Quarry, of course. Is Fred’s ship about to come in? Find out when the gang finishes out the evening at the employee hot tub party, where they learn how the one percent lives here in Bedrock, home to the world’s first civilization and the modern stone-age family-The Flintstones. Don’t miss this extra-sized debut issue!
CHRIS: Here’s the thing about these Hanna Barbera comics from DC: They’re actually pretty darn good. I’m especially looking forward to this one because it is written by Mark Russell, the same writer behind the brilliant Prez relaunch. This looks like it might have that political social commentary as well and if it does, I’m all in.
STEPHEN: I’m so nervous to read this, as it could be really great, or it could be really awful. On the plus side, Ashley Victoria Robinson gave it a 5 Meatloaf rating on the Major Spoilers Podcast, so I have a feeling Flintstones #1 sits on the good side of the fence this week.
FUTURE QUEST #2
Writer: Jeff Parker
Artist: Evan Shaner
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Still reeling from their encounter with the ghost from outer space, Jonny and Hadji reach the wreckage of the vessel that burst through the vortex. The ship’s sole survivor doesn’t remember what she was fleeing, or even her own name…but she does know her pet is called Blip. Plus: journey to Earth’s past, 45,000 years ago-and witness the birth of the world’s first fantastic hero: Mightor!
WAYNE: I absolutely LOVED the first issue of this series, cannot wait for this one! MIIIIIIGHTORRRRR!
JUSTICE LEAGUE REBIRTH #1
Writer: Bryan Hitch
Artist: Bryan Hitch
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Spinning out of the events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1, a new day dawns for Earth’s greatest heroes as they welcome three new members to the team, including…Superman? Who is this strange visitor from a dead world-and can he be trusted? Batman and Wonder Woman aren’t so sure.
JON: Now that we’ve had a few weeks to let it sink in that the pre-Flashpoint Superman is our new Man of Steel, I’m excited to see the how the Big Blue Boy Scout fares in a team dynamic. I’m hoping this will be the start of a Justice League that feels more reminiscent of the pre-New 52 DC Universe.
RENATO JONES ONE PERCENT #3
Writer: Kaare Andrews
Artist: Kaare Andrews
Publisher: Image Comis
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Reeling from the work of “The Freelancer” the ONEs send their deluxe killer-for-hire after Renato Jones. Mr. Wicked-Awesome begins to rise again!
CHRIS: Another book with some social commentary, Renato Jones amps things up to 1,000%. Kaare Andrews knows how to make characters you hate, that’s for sure. The one percent in this book are sickening, making Renato’s slaying of them even more gratifying. Kaare Andrews’s stylistic art is icing on the cake.
SUPERMAN #2
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason
Artist: Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray
Publisher:
Cover Price: $
SOLICITATION: “THE SON OF SUPERMAN” Chapter Two: In #2, Superboy takes flight as he accompanies his father, the Man of Steel, on their first mission together to confront a creature more dangerous than anyone realizes. Will the duo triumph…or will they die when they face the lethal force of the Eradicator?
JON: I didn’t think I’d like the father/son dynamic being a primary focus of a solo Superman title but so far, it seems to be working. Let’s see if introducing Superboy to the battlefield does anything to further solidify my faith in this series.
SUPERZERO #6
Writer: Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti
Artist: Rafael de Latorre
Publisher: AfterShock Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITITATION: Everything Dru has ever wanted or feared has been realized when she has to make a decision of a lifetime, knowing her life and the lives of everyone around her will be changed forever.
WAYNE: Great title, looking forward to seeing this issue!
THE FIX #4
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Steve Lieber
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Mac’s new partner doesn’t seem to like him very much.
CHRIS: Spencer and Lieber have yet to disappoint me with The Fix. Every issue has been fun, hilarious and raunchy. Just the way I like my comics.
