With the 3.0 release of Disney Infinity, the Marvel characters are getting a makeover for the Marvel Battlegrounds.
Marvel Battlegrounds, the upcoming Play Set for Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, featuring a new four-player, arcade brawler style of gameplay, and an original Marvel storyline. Developed by United Front Games, in partnership with Avalanche Software, Marvel Battlegrounds is the first Disney Infinity Play Set to feature four-player gameplay. With full compatibility for all Disney Infinity Marvel characters, Marvel Battlegrounds features the widest selection of playable characters of any previous Play Set.
This sounds very cool, but those who already have Disney Infinity 3.0 may have already noticed one key/potential problem. The current portal supports TWO characters. Will we need to purchase a different base station in order to add two more characters? Seems a tad risky to ask fans to purchase another base so soon after the launch of the new system.
Marvel Battlegrounds launches in March 2016, and will feature Hulkbuster, Ultron and Captain America – The First Avenger, with more characters being announced ahead of the release date.
I’m digging this new Captain America look – a lot more detail than the previous release, though I fear Disney may loose its unique style and character design from the first release of the game.

In the original storyline, Ultron teams up with Loki in an effort to steal Asgard’s immensely powerful Infinity Stone. To accomplish this, Ultron and Loki create robotic replicas of the famed Marvel Super Heroes and turn them against each other in an effort to distract them while they commit their crime. The Marvel Super Heroes duplicates battle each other in iconic environments such as a wrecked Brooklyn train yard, Wakanda and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Lunar Base, culminating in a universe-shaking battle against Ultron.
More information about Marvel Battlegrounds will be revealed at the New York Comic Con this weekend during the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition: Facing Off in Marvel’s Battleground panel. The panel is scheduled for Saturday, October 10th from 4:00 – 4:45 PM at Empire Stage 1-E. It might be a good idea to show up to that event if you are going (and if you are an Infinity fan) as I hear attendees may receive an exclusive pre-release figure.
The rest of us will have to watch the live stream. http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/Events/NYCCLive/?campaignid=61882341&iusercampaignid=88784108

I can only take a guess, but maybe 4 player mode uses a system similar to the 3ds version of the DI games, reading and storing characters instead of needing them on the portal. Or perhaps it assumes of the multiple players more than one person owns a portal.
I really hope it doesn’t require buying a special portal. That would not only be frustrating, but it would give more ammo to those annoying people that complain how you have to buy everything to play (no, I don’t mean kids who WANT everything, that is different). And if you need a special portal, they would finally be at least part right.
