IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
But what to read?
Fortunately, the Major Spoilers Staff have comic book recommendations for you!
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #12
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist:Giuseppe Camuncoli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE FIRST HUGE BATTLE! Wait, if the first fights were just skirmishes, this can’t mean anything good for the Spiders. Miles Morales shows his stuff! Silk finds something valuable on her run! Meet the most surprising Spider-Character yet!
ROB: Have I mentioned how good Dan Slott is at making Spider-Man the best character he can possibly be, regardless of who’s behind the mask? Because he is, and with the bevvy of Spiders in this story that means every character is the best they can possibly be, and it is, of course, Amazing!
STEPHEN: Oh… my… guess who is not dead anymore?
ANT-MAN #1
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Mrk Brooks
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Scott Lang has never exactly been the world’s best super hero. Heck, most people don’t even think he’s been the best ANT-MAN — and the last guy invented Ultron and joined the Masters of Evil, so that’s saying something. • But when the SUPERIOR IRON MAN calls with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Scott’s going to get a chance to turn it all around and be the hero he’s always dreamed of being. • Sure he’s been to prison! Sure he’s been through a messy divorce! Sure he’s been, um… dead. But this time is different! This time nothing is gonna stop the astonishing ANT-MAN!
CHRIS: Nick Spencer’s works best with the lesser known super characters, so his Ant-Man is a must read for me this week. If he’s able to bring the kind of fun that he does to Superior Foes of Spider-Man then this one will be good. I hope that price tag shrinks soon though.
MATTHEW: I want this book and the movie to be a massive hit, so that all the sarcastic jackwagons on the internet will eat their words like they did with Guardians Of The Galaxy.
STEPHEN: After watching last night’s trailer for the upcoming Ant-Man movie, I’m more interested than ever in reading this book. Perhaps the trailer release, and this first issue were timed to illicit that effect?
BRAINSTORM #5
Writer: Jeffrey Morris, Ira Livingston
Artist: Dennis Calero
Publisher: Future Dude Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the rubble of Project Zephyr, the ‘Nado Ninjas discover a battered Cale Isaacs and the remnants of his team. Together, they devise a plan to stop Hurricane Brandon once and for all, a Storm that now covers half of the northern hemisphere located directly above Wyoming!
WAYNE: I really like all the offerings I’ve read so far from Future Dude, so I wanted to give this excellent book a plug. It’s loaded with high-octane science fiction, and I love that, so it’s been a great read since it started! Don’t miss it if you’re a sci-fi guy like I am!
DEADLY CLASS #10
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Wesley Craig
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Even teens training to be the world’s coldest killers need a day off, so Marcus and Maria hit the streets of San Francisco. But you know what doesn’t mesh well with too much booze and heartbreak? A seething cartel hit squad! It’s true. Look it up.
GEORGE: Deadly Class is such a good series, meshing together teen angst and anger, action and violence, with some of the best art currently on the market. It’s consistently one of the best reads every week it comes out.
FADE OUT #4
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.50
SOLICITATION: Sex and violence in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Charlie’s flashbacks to the war affect his work, and his secret mission to solve a covered up murder. And remember, like all BRUBAKER/PHILLIPS comics, the back pages of THE FADE OUT are filled with extra art and articles you can only find in the single issues!
CHRIS: The Fade Out is spectacular in its dark and gritty depiction of old Hollywood and Brubaker is crafting a great mystery. I’m always excited for this and find that the supplemental material is even more intriguing than the actual story. A must for crime and movie fans.
STEPHEN: This issue’s ending has the kicker that we’ve been waiting for as the pieces start to fall into place for Charlie. Excellent story, excellent art! Get this book!
HAWKEYE VS DEADPOOL #4
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: James Harren
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • It’s been a wild ride, but we made it to this loony limited’s FINAL ISSUE! • You wouldn’t want to be the only one on the block who doesn’t know how the story ends, wouldja? • A BOMBASTIC conclusion to an EXPLOSIVE adventure of the DYNAMITE team of Hawkeye (Barton), Hawkeye (Bishop), and Deadpool (not Hawkeye). • Explosions.
GEORGE: Man, this series was much better than I expected it to be. But with regular Deadpool writer Gerry Duggan at the helm, it has much better reason to exist than most Marvel miniseries, and Matteo Lolli’s art created the best non-verbal reaction shot of 2014. This was a funny series, well worth checking out if you missed it.
ROB: Hawkeye and Deadpool teaming up is exactly what the Marvel Universe needs and while excited to see the end of the arc, I am sorely disappointed to see the end of the limited. I hope we can get this group together again soon.
ROBOCOP #7
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carlos Magno
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After bringing down the latest customized ED-209 monstrosity without a firearm or partner, RoboCop is beginning to question whether he is being set up for failure. Only Detective Anne Lewis can see the pattern. Everything going wrong in Detroit and crippling OCP is stemming from one man: Killian.
WAYNE: Look, I know that Birthright from Image Comics is also coming out this week from Mr. Williamson, but few people seem to realize that he’s also scripting this comic. And that’s a shame since it’s very good and true to the films and TV shows based on the character. Highly recommended!
SCOOBY-DOO TEAM-UP #8
Writer: Scholly Fisch
Artist: Scott Jeralds
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Scooby and the gang meet George Jetson, his boy Elroy… (you can sing the rest of the theme song for yourself!). In the far-flung future, everyday people like the Jetsons don’t like to believe in superstition. But people are people – and they flip their jetpacks to overdrive to flee from the unexpected appearance of the Space-Age Spectre!
MATTHEW: Scooby-Doo and The Jetsons?
Please cease your speaking and take the three bucks…
SEPARATORS #2
Writer: Omar Spahi
Artist: P.J. Catacutan
Publisher: OSSM Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Twists and turns are ahead as Dom and Jennifer meet with Jen’s family. Steven continues to hunt the Fire Xenoglyph in New York City, putting him face to face with its bearer, Bailey. Will he finally get his hands on it or will Anubis get to Bailey first?
WAYNE: OSSM (pronounced “awesome”) Comics are making a lot of great product, and this one is one of the very coolest! I enjoy the blend of magic and character in this series, which spun out of the Xenoglyphs miniseries. I love this series, and I think you will, too, if you enjoy something different in your reading diet!
UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1
Writer: Ryan North
Artist: Erica Henderson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
Cover Image URL:
SOLICITATION: Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Thanos: There’s one hero that’s beaten them all—and now she’s got her own ongoing series! (Not that she’s bragging.)
• That’s right, you asked for it, you got it, it’s SQUIRREL GIRL! (She’s also starting college this semester.)
• It’s the start of a brand-new series of adventures starring the nuttiest and most upbeat super hero in the world!
CHRIS: I love me some obscure, wacky characters and Squirrel Girl is one of the silliest. I know nothing about her but have been told she’s awesome. Hopefully this book will show me why. I mean, the solicitation wouldn’t lie would it?
MATTHEW: I’m in, based solely on the fun-factor of the main character and her light-hearted (but unbeatable) powerset…
ROB: Squirrel Girl has been one of those amazing, semi-joke characters for years, and it’s been great. Watching her star in her own series seems like a fund time and I’m happy to come along for the ride.
THE WOODS #9
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Michael Dialynas
Publisher: BOOM! Stuidos
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: New story arc! Having barely escaped their confrontation with the swarm, the hunters have led Adrian, Karen, Calder and company to their breathtaking home base. But just when they think they may have found answers to what brought them to this alien world, a horror from the teens’ past rears its ugly head…
GEORGE: The Woods started out as an intriguing series, and has built on its impressive debut with interesting character work. Every answer brings a new question, and so far I’ve been very satisfied with the mythology. Good stuff.
