Ten years ago I loved Firefly and thought it was great. I still think it’s good, but the devotion of the fanbase never fails to amaze me because it’s just good. Its underdog credentials, I think, boost it up in the minds of many beyond what it deserves.
I’m not trying to malign anyone who has a genuine love for Firefly, but I wonder if their love is more of a Whedon fixation than a reflection on the show’s quality. There’re tons of great sci-fi shows out there, such as Babylon 5, that never seem to reap the respect due their planning, casting and endurance.
I do somewhat agree with some of your points, but I suppose this is a good example of “mileage may vary”. For instance, I was never a fan of Babylon 5, but I did enjoy Firefly. That isn’t to say B5 was a bad show, just that it didn’t appeal to me personally (and believe me, I really tried because it seemed like it would be right up my alley).
