The adult film industry has been on the cutting edge of technology for years, but it has only been in the last couple of years, that the industry has realized the potential of tapping into the nerd/fan culture of superheroes in an attempt to boost sales and interest in performers and creative talent. We took a look at the complete AVN Awards 2012 nominations list to see just how many superhero/nerd culture films made the list.

I’m sure there will be some who question why titles like Saturday Night Fever XXX, and Saw: A Hardcore Parody aren’t on the list. My definition of superhero/nerd culture titles is rather scattered. If I included ALL XXX parody titles, the percentages would be much higher. For example, in the Best Actor category, there were 15 actors nominated, and of those 11 were parody titles).
In the end (no pun intended), there are 108 categories dedicated to the films and performers. Of those, 32 feature a superhero/nerd culture title in them, or roughly 30%. That’s quite a bit, and as more of these adult films continue to gain attention, awards, and recognition, the industry will continue to crank more out. Granted, this breakdown only represents titles being nominated for an AVN Award – if one compared the total number of films released in 2011 to the number of superhero/nerd culture specific released, that number would drop dramatically.
