Press Release
Hermes Press adds to their slate of classic comic strip reprint editions with Smokey Stover and Spooky the Cat. Comic strip and comic book historian extraordinaire Jerry Robinson described cartoonist Bill Holman (in the pages of The Comics) as “an outrageous punster and wordsmith,” and Holman’s wit is on display in the volume due out in 2012.
Smokey Stover follows the slapstick misadventures of a screwball fireman (Smokey, natch) who lives in a pun-filled world with visual gags permeating every panel. The strip ran from 1935 to 1973 and coined such crazy lingo as “foo” and “1506 nix nix.” Hermes is also including the Spooky the Cat Sunday topper strips (separate strips that ran along the top of the main strip), which follow the life of the black firehouse cat with the bandaged tail. The volume will be the perfect primer for readers new to Holman’s inimitable work, and invaluable for long-time fans.
The strips are taken directly from Tribune Media’s press proofs, and promise the crispest reproduction of the zany fireman’s exploits to date.

I remember seeing a “how to” make Smokeys car article, with the trick being that the tire hid two wheels in an inverted V that contacted the ground and balance the car.
