Remember way back in the long ago when Scatman Crothers voiced the janitor dog turned kung-fu fighting dog? Of course you don’t half of you don’t even remember Wendy and Marvin…
But for those of you who do, you might be surprised to learn that H’wood is working on a Hong Kong Phooey movie, and Alcon Entertainment has tapped Eddie Murphy as the lead. Eddie Murphy does a fine job of providing memorable voices for memorable characters, but unless he’s able to bring a very unique voice for Henry, the mild-mannered janitor, I have a feeling most audiences are going to ask, “Why does that dog sound like Donkey?”
And while the idea of a Hong Kong Phooey movie sounds cool, it looks like the studio is gearing this to be a live action/CGI combo, not unlike the recent Smurfs movie, which seems rather odd. What I really hope the studio steers away from is the Underdog type live-action/CGI, ’cause that would look really dumb…

What, not only has Hollywood run out of new idea and fallen back on retreading old properties and TV shows, they are now fallen back on retreading second tier filler stuff? What’s next? Jeopardy – The Movie?
Test Pattern – In 3D? Zombie Gilligan Island? Scatman Cruthers was the only good part of the original cartoon.
Oh, and it’s not that I didn’t remember Marvin and Wendy. It’s most because, even when I was a kid, SuperFriends was such a dumb….. well… suffice it to say that the show would have insulted the intelligence of a rock. Adding a team of “kiddie” sidekicks to try to make a stupid show appeal to kids rather than – say – actually producing a GOOD program – never struck me as a winning strategy.
Some of us have tried very hard to forget Wendy and Marvin. Now, you bring them up again. 5 years of therapy down the drain.
We do our best! Plus, you therapist is paying us under the table…
NO, Hollowood,(hollywood), butcherin’ another one of my favorite cartoons for their bottom line. Sorry Eddie is not going pull this off. Scatman Crothers was the voice of Hong Kong Phooey. Just like they did in the first Bay Transformers, they ghettoized Jazz(voiced by Scatman in Transformers Gen 1 cartoon), and then killed him. I’m not saying they’re going to kill Henry(Hong Kong Phooey). They’ll go out of their way to ghetoize him… Like with the Smurfs I voted with my wallet and decided not to got see it.
Even my 3 year old knows that the voice of Hong Kong Phooey is Scatman Crothers. Honestly though, I don’t care if they make the movie or not. Even if it’s terrible it’ll be something my little boys will probably like and that’s all I really worry about with those movies anymore. I have no interest in watching Smurfs but if the boys want to watch it, it’ll be fine by me.
