Previously in X of Swords: Polaris has prophesied that Krakoa needs ten champions to fight against Arrako. Wolverine is among the chosen to participate in this tournament for the fate of mutantkind. However, he needs to dwell into his past to receive a blade that he will bring to this battle and in turn find a new nemesis.

    TO HELL AND BACK

Wolverine quickly realizes that he is to be one of the fighters for mutantkind. He talks to the tree of Krakoa and laments to it about keeping the Eternal Gate open and forcing this war on him. Meanwhile, War finds her champion. The man who killed her husband; an hedonist known as Solem. Wolverine begins to search for Muramasa to give him another blade. First he talks to the Silver Samurai and then many of his old contacts in Japan. The book now gives us a parallel between Wolverine’s journey back in the past verses his journey to find a sword now. Unfortunately, it seems that Muramasa is missing and that he is in hell itself. Wolverine makes it to hell where his skin is melted off and he sees Muramasa crafting a blade and begging Logan for help.

    WOLVERINE AS A CHAMPION

I mean, we all knew that Wolverine was going to be a champion right? There was no way that an X-Men event was going to happen without Wolverine being a major player. However, we see Wolverine looking for Muramasa to create an old blade and that proves to be interesting. How will this influence Daken who is currently running with X-Factor? How will this affect Wolverine who hates that he has to fight a war for a living island? Will this bring out the anger in Wolverine again and perhaps change his psyche? For me, I wonder what is the price the mutants are going to pay for this fight. Certainly the cost is going to be very high.

The story itself moved very fast. We sort of montaged a lot of Wolverine’s past and made a jump from the world of the living to Wolverine being in a lava pit. I think it was a smart decision to ignore some of the stuff I would consider boring for the purpose of getting to the interesting parts. The art was also very riveting. Seeing the adamantium skeleton is always a haunting picture. Very vivid and haunting as it crawls out of this pit of lava. Great decisions here considering how much content we have to get too for this event.

    BOTTOM LINE: I LIKED IT

I think we are going to see a lot of cool things happening in X-Men over the next few months. I enjoyed seeing a nod to the old Wolverine concepts and ideas and wonder how it will affect the events to come. X of Swords has been incredibly riveting because I can’t decide if I want Krakoa to be a safe haven for the mutants or if I think they fit better in the real world. Regardless, I’m interested to see what they do both with Solem and with Muramasa. 4.5 out of 5 for Wolverine #6 from me.
