Toys R Us continues to deal with its bankruptcy issues with the announcement it is closing 182 stores – one-fifth of its stores in the United States.

The stores will begin closing in February, and closures are expected to end in April. In Kansas, the two stores we have frequented over the years are closing, but the Topeka, KS store looks like it will remain open. According to Toys R Us, Canada stores are not expected to close. There are still over 1,400 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores around the world after this round of closing.
In the past, Toys R Us was the place to go to buy the cool toys, and I remember going to the Smyrna, GA store almost on a weekly basis. The same is true for many of the California stores when I loved there in the early 2000s. Interestingly, for the last two years, almost all toy purchases have been made from our local Big Box Store or online. Our Christmas 2017 shopping was done exclusively through Amazon. There have been a number of factors that have contributed to the Toys R Us decline, but I can’t help but think the largest factor is online sales.

While I’m not immediately affected, as my two closest stores are staying open, I do have a little twinge of sadness because a couple of stores I frequented when I lived in other areas are on the list.
