Apparently Batman is dead, but you’d never know it if you’ve been reading Detective Comics for the last year or so. The plausible exit created by Paul Dini at the end of last issue, leads naturally to the events Denny O’Neil uses in Detective Comics #851. Batman dead? Unlikely, so why mourn the loss here? Instead, O’Neil uses the time to tell a good Detective story.

Oh Dear God, Make It Stop! For the last couple of months I’ve subjected myself to one of the most bizarre team up stories ever written. While this is supposed to be a Superman Batman team up, Superman failed to appear in the first two issues, and save for a moment of the two passing one another on the way to bring down a Lovecraftian horror, the two have been following separate storylines. Throw in passing cameos galore, and you have the makings of a mega crossover event. Right?
It’s man against nature, and nature looks like it is winning With the Death of the New Gods, Superman disappearing in Trinity, and Supergirl going through whatever Supergirl is going through at the moment, you’d think another book featuring Superman, Supergirl, and the New Gods would not be high on my radar. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been looking forward to Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom, for the great art, the compelling story, and the fact it gives readers a break from the complicated goings on in the main Superman titles.

Things are not well in jolly ol’ England After the very excellent Crooked Man run, and the equally enjoyable In the Chapel of Moloch, it’s time to for a much larger and deep storyline that runs maybe as far back as the first issue in 1991. One thing that is a given, with Mike Mignola back, readers are going to be in for one hell of a ride.
Or – “Setting Up The NEXT Big Crossover…”  Marvel has sent us from crossover to crossover in the last few years, from House of M to Civil War to World War Hulk to Secret Invasion, with the overall effect being that there is no longer a status quo to upend. Since the entirety of their publishing plan seems to be “Everything you know is wrong,” this makes for a somewhat tempestuous relationship with books like this. Now, Secret Invasion is ending, and the question we all have to ask is: How long a timeframe have these stories all taken…
What Gog Giveth, Gog Taketh Away What happens if you don’t do what a god tells you to do? That’s what the members of the Justice Society of America are about to find out as Gog makes a demand that not everyone is comfortable with.

So far, December has stepped on my toes, kicked me in the shmeckle, thrown dirt at my face, stolen my girlfriend, poured salt in my gas tank, and eaten my last Oreo. Okay… the whining is done, let’s talk ’bout comics!!!
