If you are looking for the Major Spoilers reviews of comic books from the comic book industry, you’ve found it! The best and the worst comics are reviewed each week.

Arriving in stores this week (April 22, 2009)  is Dynamite Entertainment’s latest series – Buck Rogers.  For most of us, the Gil Gerard series from 1979 is probably the only exposure we’ve had to the futuristic hero.  And while there have been more recent video and role playing games based on the universe created by Philip Francis Nowlan, it takes a brand new comic book series to bring the excitement back to reading comics set in the far future.

Because I hate typing Nyarlathotep… The mythos of Cthulhu has had a huge boost in popularity, due in part to the comic book series featuring the old one’s name on the cover.  Boom! Studios has cranked out horrific Cthulhu tales, side splitting comedy featuring three of the Lovecraftian gods, and tales that make readers want to read the issue again and again.  This week, Boom! kicks off another mini-series, Fall of Cthulhu Nemesis, and Major Spoilers is bringing you a first look.

Or – “Meanwhile, Back At The Space Ranch…” While Hal Jordan has had his hands full with Red and Blue Lantern issues (and been possessed by rings of both Corps) in sector 666, the rest of the known universe has also been dealing with buildup to the upcoming Blackest Night, and the remaining 7199 Lanterns have likewise been out and about with things to do, but only one book to show for themselves…  Now that I mention it, 7199 to 1 seems to be an unfair ratio of Green Lanterns between the two books.  Hal Jordan must have one hell…

Love is a bitch… After the last done in one issue of Army of Darkness, any hope of reading another one immediately following seemed low.  Fortunately, Dynamite Entertainment delivers another self-contained issue that sees our boy Ash getting a little lovin’.

Or – “It’s Not Really Issue 565, By The Way…” So, in recent months, the Fantastic Four has been put under the direction of a new superstar Writer/Artist team (Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, also responsible for the first two “seasons” of the Ultimates) and they have been building to a overarching plotline that seems to be ready to reveal the existeance of a terrifying menace that out-Doom’s even Doctor Doom.  But, before all of that happens, we have Marvel’s First Family visiting their distant relatives for Christmas, hanging out in a not-at-all sinister small town where everything is perfectly normal, and nothing…

For once the doc can’t claim Oedipus Complex In a world without Superman (again), heroes have risen to take his place (again).  And as is often the case in these tales, the new heroes have a connection to the old, but what of those heroes that have a villain for a parent?  And what happens if both parents are evil?  And what if one of them wants to kill you real bad?

Or – “Names Are Important…  Names Have Emotional Value.” Here’s something that bugs me in comics: the moment where we reveal a new character using an existing name. “Here’s the new Hawkeye!”  “Here’s the new Goliath!” “Here’s the new Kid Colt!”  Well, what the hell happened to the other one?  I’ve referenced Ronin who was Echo being Hawkeye who was Goliath who was Giant-Man who was Yellowjacket who is the Wasp, but is not a woman, even though the second Yellowjacket WAS.  The use of an existing name, or worse, two characters FIGHTING over a name always have the potential…

Enter Bizorro As Zorro continues to protect the lands and citizens of California from tyrannical officials, a plot to bring the masked vigilante down begins to form, as another thrilling adventure of Senor Zorro arrives from Dynamite Entertainment.  Only twelve issue in, and it is easy to see why so many are digging this series.

Or – “Love In The Time Of Cauliflower Ear…” After last issue’s events, the members of the Six have discovered that one of their own is NOT a traitor at all, but a noble dunderhead who couldn’t think of any way to protect his friends other than shooting them and stealing their ride.  Scandal Savage may have found the secret to bringing her lost love back from the dead, and Bane has had his brains beaten out with a series of bricks (and with Bane, you can’t imagine that he’s got much to spare.)  This issue, an even worse fate…

My first thought when I heard H’wood had picked up The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft to be turned into a motion picture even before the first issue had hit the stands was, “They’re going to make a movie of this?”  Now, after finally getting my hands on the first is thought is, “They’re going to make a movie of this!”

For Honor, Friend. With the new Star Trek movie just around the corner, there is the potential for the franchise to spring to life once again, with fans, new and old, looking for the further adventures of Wagon Train in Space.  Instead of always reading the future adventures through the eyes of the Federation, IDW Publishing’s Alien Spotlight series takes a look at some of the more well known non-human characters.  This week, the bright light shines upon the Klingons, and a long lived warrior.

Or – “Not To Be Confused With Marvel Zombies 1 #4, or Marvel Zombies 3 #2…” The first Marvel Zombies miniseries was a revelation, Dead Days was excellent, and the Army of Darkness crossover weirdly interesting.  The Fantastic Four issues were disappointing, and Marvel Zombies 2 ended up being a huge blow to the success of the franchise, making it all seem lame and silly, an effect which I reasoned came from moving the characters to the Marvel Universe proper, and removing all chance that the monsters would win again.  Marvel Zombies 3, however, managed to recapture some of the fun, the drama,…
