Or – “That OTHER Marvel Universe…” There have been a lot of complaints about the event-driven nature of today’s comics industry but if you look hard enough, you can find books that don’t force you to tie in to everything else going on, and maybe even feature guest-appearances from people who aren’t X-Men.  But, does that necessarily make them a better reading experience?

The man in the Bat-suit isn’t Bruce. The man running around killing people appears to be Two-Face. The femme fatale? Uh-oh, things just got interesting.

With the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie featuring a young Magneto, I decided it was time to tackle his origin story, for behind the helm of the Master of Magnetism was, at one time, a boy. This boy experienced the Holocaust first hand, and it would shape the man he would become. Take the jump and find out if this blend of factual history, and fictional characters is worth your time.

Or – “Did You Know That The Pound Is Worth Like A Buck Twenty Five?” The exchange rate can be a scary thing.  Some years ago, I went online to purchase a couple of comics at a price already far above what I would normally pay for single issues, without noticing that the price listing was in Great Britain Pounds.  (Apparently, money is heavier in the U.K.)  As such, I ended up breaking my unofficial ‘don’t pay more than $100 bucks for one comic book’ rule twice in the same day, and ending up in the doghouse with the missus. …

Or – “The Legend Of Cliff Secord…” The late Dave Stevens was known for his art: beautiful women, vintage cars and weapons, stylized characters and classic wardrobes made his work a joy to look at.  With The Rocketeer, Dave tapped into a vein of nostalgic adventure similar to what George Lucas hit a few years earlier (the comics came out in ’82, for those of y’all that only remember the movie.)  Now that he has left us, Dave’s best known characters are returning from IDW Publishing, with all-star creative teams taking on Cliff, Betty, Peavey and the whole gang.  Will…

In the months and weeks leading up to Brink’s release, I had enveloped myself in the developer diaries and gameplay videos that had been released by the game developer, Splash Damage. I was intrigued by its originality; Brink ambitiously blended parkour-style movement, classed-based gameplay (ala Team Fortress 2), a blended campaign/multi-player experience, and a very stylized look.
