Or – “There Was A Time When He Was My Fave-Rave…” Once in a while, I feel a bit guilty about my general take on some of the more popular heroes.  I have a few favorite X-Men tales, a few bits of beloved Batman ephemera, even one or two Wolverine stories that I enjoy.  Spider-Man may get the worst of this, though, in that I started reading his adventures quite early in my comics diet.  When things went wrong (in my mind, anyway) with Spidey, they went WAAAAY wrong, and part of me never forgave Marvel for that.  As for what…

Or – “Two Guys Talking Can Be As Tense As A Fistfight…” One of the highlights of the early arcs of The Boys came when Wee Hughie sat down with the man known only as The Legend (any resemblance to comic figures past or present is probably intentional) for a history lesson about superhumans.  The last couple of issues have given us even more depth and world-building as Greg Mallory explains the events that led up to the formation of The Boys themselves…  It’s been a bloody story, but it ain’t over yet.

Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai is an extremely influential piece. It has spawned hundreds of other works. Some, like the Magnificent Seven are practically the same movie, transposed to a different time and place. Others like Oceans Eleven and the Three Amigos are send-ups or riffs on its structure. So when I first heard that an anime series had been made based on Seven Samurai my head filled with questions. How faithful would this be? How can you take an two-hour-long film and stretch it over twenty-something episodes? These were all intriguing questions. Of course as you can see from the…

Or – “Two Teams With Much In Common…” In the early 80s, DC Comics was pretty much on the skids.  It was the Teen Titans that put a stop to their sales fall, and as always with comics, a successful move causes editorial to go back to the well again.  Luckily, the well brought up the Outsiders, a team fronted by Batman instead of Robin, who consisted of two existing characters and three new kids, just like the Titans themselves.  It was inevitable that Barr & Aparo’s Outsiders would meet Wolfman & Perez’s Titans, especially given the presence of Geo-Force…

Or – “Kinda Feels Like A Retro Review, Doesn’t It?” One of the first times that I recall being aware of the creative teams behind the comics was when Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz took over Amazing Spider-Man from Roger Stern and John Romita, Jr. back in the 80’s.  By consciously taking Spidey’s adventures back to something resembling Lee/Ditko, the team cemented themselves as the “retro guys” in my mind.  A later run on Thor that was strongly influenced by Lee/Kirby added to that assessment, and the return of Thunderstrike from the tar pit of the 90’s adds a third…
