Variety is reporting that the House of Mouse has acquired the rights to Top Shelf Comix graphic novel “The Surrogates”. Jonathan Mostow will direct, with Michael Ferris and John Brancato signed as writers. “This is a Philip K. Dick-like futuristic universe, but people who live a second life already on the Internet can relate to some of the themes here,” said Brancato, who with Ferris is adapting the Robert Ludlum novel “Sigma Protocol” for Strike Entertainment. There’s an interesting little bit in the New York Daily News gossip section that claims Jake Gyllenhaal is in talk to play Captain Marvel in the Shazam! movie. Personally, I don’t see it, but then again, I never thought Tobey Maguire was the best person to play Spider-Man before I saw it for myself. Another tid-bit says New Line is trying to make this movie as big or bigger than the DC Batman and Superman films with a rumored budget of $200 million. Over the weekend, the Frank Miller graphic novel turned Zach Snyder direct Warner Bros. movie brought home a staggering $70 million in box office receipts, making it the third biggest R-rated movie opener. MTV has posted 300 seconds of Frank Miller’s 300 scheduled to open March 9. Dang, if this is the first part of the film, then I’m hooked and can’t wait to get in line on Friday. The film is highly stylized, which may put some people off, but I think if you see past the effects and focus on the story/action, you’ll be able to enjoy the film more. via MTV (link)
For the second week in a row, Marvel’s Ghost Rider took the number one spot at the box office raking in an additional $19.7 million. This is a huge drop of 56.6% from a week ago. Back in the day a drop of more than 20% was considered a box office failure (Jurassic Park 2 anyone?). However, the marketing gurus are spinning this to say the movie is doing even better than the box office indicates. Sony and Marvel hit another one out of the ballpark this past weekend as Ghost Rider revved his way to the top of the box office charts raking in $44.5 million over the three day weekend. According to Variety, this is the biggest opening of the year so far.
