It came as no surprise to me as The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took the number one spot at the box office raking in an estimated $25 million for Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Co. Leo and crew were able to use their box office draw to topple the Spartans from Frank Miller’s 300, which took the number two spot. Next weekend should hopefully see a boost in box office sales, but if you then calculate a regular weekly drop between 30 and 40 percent, the ninja turtle movie could easily make over $100 million. “It’s sequel time, dudes,” said…

Don’t worry, it’s only a fan film, and a short one at that. Well, not exactly. But fan and short film maker Mark Steensland has begun work on his own Dead @ 17 short film adapting the first issue of the original series. While not an “official” production and techically considered a fan film, Mark nonetheless has my blessing and I can’t wait to see the final product. via Josh Howard (link)

Jon Favreau posted a quick message over at his MySpace page letting everyone know what is up with Iron Man. We are done with the first week of photography. I am happy to report that the ten months of preparation allowed the extremely challenging first week of photography to come off without a hitch. The look is fantastic and the performances are great as well. Downey was definitely the right choice. I’m looking forward to getting out of the “cave.” The first few weeks of shooting are spent, somewhat in sequence, establishing Stark’s captivity. It sets the table tonally for…

Looks like the Jake Gyllenhaal playing Captain Marvel rumor, was just that – a rumor. At least according to John August, screen writer for the flick. But the thing is, he’s not considering. I can pretty much assure you he’s never heard of the project. And we’ve never discussed him. We’ve never seriously discussed anyone. After several months of meetings, casting has come up exactly zero times. There’s no casting list. If there were a list, Gyllenhaal’s name would probably be on it, but trust me: there is no list. There’s no start date, no release date, no movie whatsoever.…

Variety is reporting that the House of Mouse has acquired the rights to Top Shelf Comix graphic novel “The Surrogates”. Jonathan Mostow will direct, with Michael Ferris and John Brancato signed as writers. “This is a Philip K. Dick-like futuristic universe, but people who live a second life already on the Internet can relate to some of the themes here,” said Brancato, who with Ferris is adapting the Robert Ludlum novel “Sigma Protocol” for Strike Entertainment. Subject matter is edgy for Disney, and Oren Aviv is eyeing Touchstone as a home for it. “This is a grounded sci-fi premise, but…

There’s an interesting little bit in the New York Daily News gossip section that claims Jake Gyllenhaal is in talk to play Captain Marvel in the Shazam! movie. Personally, I don’t see it, but then again, I never thought Tobey Maguire was the best person to play Spider-Man before I saw it for myself. Another tid-bit says New Line is trying to make this movie as big or bigger than the DC Batman and Superman films with a rumored budget of $200 million. Remember, for now this is all rumor until contracts are signed. via NY Daily News (link)

Daniel Robert Epstein has an interview with Ron Perlman over at Newsarama, in which the actor says he may be up for the role of the Comedian in the Zach Snyder directed Watchmen movie. Interesting if it is true! Daniel Robert Epstein: Besides Hellboy what has been necessary for your work in terms of reading comics? Ron Perlman: Well, Frank Darabont is a really close friend of Guillermo’s and they share a boyish passion for comic books. The first time I ever met Frank was in a comic book store here on Melrose in Los Angeles. In aisle three we…

In our interviews with Tad Stones, he’s alluded to future Hellboy Animated projects waiting in the wings. Tad posted on his blog site a wee bit of information on the third film called The Phantom Claw. WOOT! How awesome of a title is that? The Phantom Claw will be an original Hellboy movie that has its roots in the comics, expands on several themes. When it came time to talk seriously about the third movie, three elements resurfaced: Lobster Johnson, Hellboy’s origin, and classic Universal Monster movies. If Sword of Storms was the folklore side of Hellboy, Blood and Iron…

Over the weekend, the Frank Miller graphic novel turned Zach Snyder direct Warner Bros. movie brought home a staggering $70 million in box office receipts, making it the third biggest R-rated movie opener. Mark Canton, who produced “300” with Gianni Nunnari, Jeff Silver and Bernie Goldmann, ascribed a large part of the movie’s success to Warners’ decision to roll it out during spring break. “That has now become a long window,” he said. Warner Bros. “took March and made it into summer.” Warners wouldn’t say if there are any plans to turn “300” — a pic shot entirely in a…
