Variety is reporting Chuck Russell has been signed to direct the Mandrake movie based on the King Features Syndicate comic. The movie is being produced by Baldwin Entertainment Group. From Wikipedia: Mandrake was an illusionist whose work was based on an impossibly fast hypnotic technique. As the narrator informed us: “Mandrake gestured hypnotically” and the subject or subjects of this hypnosis would suddenly see a cane transformed in a bouquet of flowers or a cat into a tiger. Mandrake also worked against crooks and other bad guys in his spare time. This would include common gangsters, mad scientists and aliens…

ComicbookMovie.com has posted a rumor that Matt Damon may play the role of The Green Arrow in the currently in pre-pre-production SuperMax movie penned by David Goyer. The film tells the story of a falsely accused Ollie Queen stripped of his hero gig and thrown into a super maximum security prison where he has to make a prison break with a bunch of B and C-list DC villains. I met Matt Damon yesterday in the city during his break from the 3rd installment of The Bourne Identity series and I asked him if he was doing any comic book movies.…

IGN has posted an image of the Iron Man suit – Mark I. Yeah, I’m liking this look A LOT! Well I called BS yesterday in regards to the Goyer penned Supermax movie. Late yesterday, Goyer posted the following on his website: SUPERMAX Is it real? The answer is “YES”, it’s a real project. It’s just in the early stages of development, but amongst the tidal wave of super-hero movies hitting the screen, this more classically post-modern take could be pretty damn fun. The basic concept actually came about through Justin Marks, a terrific young writer my wife Jessika (a producer) had previously worked with. They thought the idea of a prison-break story set in a jail designed exclusively for…

The Interwebs is a buzz today over an article posted at Wizard Universe that “claims” David (Batman Begins, but got punted from The Flash) Goyer has sold Warner on the idea of doing a DCU villain movie. But this isn’t some Secret Six retelling, instead it is about Green Arrow. Or at least it has Green Arrow in it for about 10 minutes. Come on you really want to believe that?

Every time I read one of these, I’m struck with the same realization I encounter trying to watch The Honeymooners or a black-and-white movie: Wow. Old things suck. So says John August, the writer of the upcoming Shazam! movie on recommending older Captain Marvel titles for people to read. Instead August recommends reading many of the newer appearances of the Big Red Cheese over at his blogsite. Before everyone gets all up in arms over August’s comments, remember even recent retellings of Captain Marvel’s adventures (Monster Society of Evil by Jeff Smith for example), re-tell the origins of how Captain…

You can read that headline in a number of different ways. If you are familiar with my life outside of comics, you’ve probably seen me write or comment about the Red One digital camera developed by Jim Jannard of Oakley glasses fame. This is one of those revolutionary pieces of technology that should officially release in a couple of weeks at the National Association of Broadcasters convention. In order to get a piece of equipment out to the mass market, it needs to be tested and developed, and that means beta testers. As much as I want one, like many…

The Hollywood Reporter has Warner Bros. snagging up the Metal Men in hopes of making a hit flick from the lesser known super heroes. Eric Champnella is signed to write, with Lauren Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie producing. Geoff Johns will serve as the Executive Produce. We all know Johns background in comics and film, but you may not know Shuler Donner brought us such hits as X-Men and Constantine. An interesting bit of info popping up around the comic blogosphere is the credit listing of Neil Patrick Harris over at IMDb. In addition to his work on Harold and Kumar 2, Harris is listed as doing voice work for Justice League: The New Frontier.
