Oh, Baby! Now this is the stuff I want to see when I go to a comic book convention – all the new action figures coming down the pipe. Mattel always has a good booth showcasing its stuff, and if these images are an indication of what is to come, my wallet is going to by mighty thin by year’s end.
The good news is, those 6-inch figures are being done by the same group that is doing the DC Universe Classic line, which means high quality sculpts with multiple points of articulation. Bonus ghost figures are nice, but I really want the first wave to be a build-a-figure Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Sonofagun! For the last year, I’ve been faithfully saving my Anti-Monitor points from Mattel’s Infinite Heroes line. I was hoping it would lead up to a major reveal where toy fans could mail away for a humongous Anti-Monitor, or at least some special figure not found anywhere else. Mattel has announced it will host two fan panels at the New York Comic Con (Feb 6 – 8, 2009) that promises to unveil a lot of new products, and some show exclusives.
A whole slew of Star Trek toys based on the upcoming JJ Abrahms movie are making their way toward toy stores in the coming months. Playmates Toys has a cool collection of action figures and sets, including the Enterprise bridge (only $25!). The starring triumvirate of Kirk, Spock and McCoy will be available in 3¾-inch ($7), 6-inch ($9-$10) and 12-inch ($30) models. Also available will be figures of the original Spock, who meets the young Spock in a time anomaly. Other crewmembers will be available in the smaller sizes. Matty Collector has announced the Adam Strange/Starfire six-inch action figures two-pack for the DCU Universe Classic series goes on sale January 15, 2009 at 12:00 PM. I can’t believe this collection is already up to the 8th wave – I’m still trying to get my hands on a complete 2nd Wave set! With each preview I receive, I get more excited about this line, especially the build a figure feature. I know it isn’t a new concept, but it is for DC figures, and the one in Wave 8 is a knockout. I finally had a chance to catch an episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold this past weekend, and now I’m curious about what the action figures will look like. A quick search of the Interweb Nets and the answer is found in the form of Mattel’s packaging for the upcoming Brave and the Bold line.
