This week, I’m going to start things off by “pulling back the curtain,” if only just for a moment. The whole idea behind the From the Vault series is to highlight older, oft-forgotten cinema gems that have, in one way or another, a connection to the realm of comic books. Honestly, this piece is supposed to be mainly about older flicks. But one can’t live on “Golden Oldies” alone, so this weekend I ventured out into the world and caught a showing of Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man II. Is it another instant classic, or does it…

Or – “You Always Hurt The Ones You Love…” There is a common misconception amongst those who listen to the podcast that Rodrigo is the only one who really knows the X-Men.  There are a number of stories (Morrison’s New X-Men, Days of Future Past, the 1991 relaunch, the original appearance of Juggernaut, the Mimic/Super-Adaptoid battle) that are among my favorites, and I’m passing familiar with the team in all it’s iterations (otherwise I wouldn’t be able to manage my back issue bins at work.)  There are even X-Men stories that I think are absolutely amazing, and beyond reproach awesome. …

Or – “How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Red & Silver…” Everyone has deeply held, inexplicable beliefs about the exploits of their comic heroes.  My friend Dusty won’t read Avengers without Iron Man, Cap and Thor.  Stephen is still burning about the cancellation of ‘Legend of the Dark Knight.’  Otter Disaster can’t stand the way Superman “swims” through the air, and used to say that when he learned to fly, he’d do it STANDING UP.  I am often the target of derision at the store (GATEKEEPER HOBBIES, Huntoon & Gage, Topeka!  Ask us about Matt Wagner’s Demon mini!) for…

Sit down, kids. Ol’ Sam’s going to tell you all a story. Once upon a time, there was a certain comic publisher who was on the verge of bankruptcy. To stay in business, this company sold the film rights of many of its popular characters to… well, whoever was willing to pay, to be honest. In 1992, Constantin Films was about to lose the rights on their property unless production began by December. This left Bernd Eichinger, the head of Constantin Films, with a real problem. He really wanted to make a film with these characters, but didn’t have enough…

Ahh, the ’70’s. A time of afros, bell-bottoms, and oddly enough, in the case of CBS television, attempts at superhero TV shows. Today, the most well-know of these shows are Wonder Woman starring____, The Greatest American Hero starring William Katt (a personal favorite of mine), and of course The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and (the eternal con-man) Lou Ferrigno. What many casual viewers today don’t know is that CBS also had the adaptation rights to many more of Marvel’s intellectual properties. Many of these characters were held onto until the mid-1980’s, where they were used as a way to…

Statue maker Kotobukiya has unveiled a brand new statue in its Bishoujo line with the Phoenix. An elemental force of fire and life, the Phoenix found a suitable host template in Jean Grey, the X-Man known as Marvel Girl.  When Grey seemingly sacrificed herself to save her teammates the alien entity took her place and started a whole new heroic chapter in the saga of the Phoenix.  Now for the first time Phoenix is presented in the Japanese Bishoujo (pretty girl) style based on original character art by illustrator Shunya Yamashita. The statue is sculpted by Koel Matsumoto and stands…

You expected a super-sized image?  This IS a Minimate.  And a Minimate that looks pretty awesome at that.  The Mark V Iron Man figures ships in a two back with War Machine. It’s been a while since I’ve added any Minimates to my massive collection, and these two just might find their way into the pile. via Art Asylum
