Or – “Magic And The Legion.  Two Great Tastes That Taste WEIRD Together…” Throughout the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes, many of their members have gotten their powers from experimentation run wild (Sun Boy, Wildfire, Quislet, and even the Ranzz twins, in a way) whereas others have gained their powers from simple genetics (Dawnstar, Cosmic Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, etc.)  But for many years in the bright and shiny future, no one gained their abilities from manipulation of the mystic powers, from the hoary hosts of the neitherworld, or from the various powers beyond the pale.  When Mysa Nal, the…

Issue #20 of Batman Confidential continues ‘The Bat and the Cat’ storyline by adding another Bat to the mix, in the fourth part of this five part series. Seeing as the review for #19 is probably not far away from this sentence, I won’t bother reviewing what has happened, except to say that it is awesome!

In lieu of the fact that I may not have been the only one to miss the release of Batman Confidential #19, I’ve decided, in the face of the release of issue #20, to review both. I won’t do it at the same time, because that would take away from the fact that these are two really great issues, and deserved of their own time in the sun.

According to the New York Times, the Watchmen Trailer Effect continues to affect the number of copies DC is releasing to meet demand.  According to DC’s Paul Levitz, the Watchmen trade paperback will reach over one million copies before the end of the year compared to last year’s print run of 100,000 copies. I’m sure by now everyone has read Robert Downey Jr.’s comments about the Dark Knight movie, and DC in general, but just in case, let’s shake that hornet’s nest again. My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still…

Or – “A Week Late And A Dollar Short…  Appropriate For The Bug.” Once again, I stand before you as “The Old Dude,” relating stories of things that happened long before most of you were cognizant of comics, before some of ya’s were born.  My friend Becky has been known to remark that any story that starts with “Well, what had happened was…” or “There we were…” lets you know that you’re about to hear a bunch of lies.  So, there we were, in the Summer of ’84, and what had happened was this: The comics world was in chaos.  The DC…

Even with the opening weekend of the Olympics, fans still flocked to theaters to see Warner Bros. Dark Knight.  While Pineapple Express came in a close second, the Chris Nolan flick brought in an additional $26 million over the weekend.  This brings the grand total to $441.5 million, meaning the Batman film has passed Shrek 2 to become the third highest domestic grosser of all time. If that has you sitting up and taking notice, get ready for a major head trip – by this time next week, The Dark Knight should bring in enough money to pass Star Wars…

Or – “Robot ROLL CALL!” The concept of “the bright and shiny future” is the key behind the popularity of the Legion over the years, but what that future entails has changed with each decade.  What started as a bunch of squeaky-clean teens in an upturned rocket ship had to evolve with the changing times, as the kids of the Legion and the readership aged.  When the Legion was rebooted in the 1990’s, the strange future where everybody was clean-cut and had a nice stable family upbringing had finally been thrown aside, and we got to see the Legionnaires recast…

“You know what?  Whatever…” As I’ve mentioned before, Final Crisis is not the best crisis DC has ever put out.  As issue three hits the stands, some questions are answered, but the overall feeling of the entire series is still something that doesn’t quite seem to fit with the rest of the DCU.
