We learned late yesterday that Black Panther will be taking over the duties of the man without fear once Daredevil slips this mortal coil (more info later), but for now take a look at the latest teaser from Marvel.

Great. Way to completely ruin one of the few altruistic heroes in the Marvel U. Sam Wilson’s been the “protector of Harlem” and the person that gave Steve Rogers real glimpses into sides of America previously neglected in comics. Now you take the person that would be the strongest influence on Bucky/Cap to pick up on a lot of things that he would have had no experience with as the “Winter Solider” and you have him play Luke Cage with wings and a hawk. You take a hero that has been one of the few to address issues of gang violence (where is that in comics, by the way? More people die each week in gang-related violence that in Afganistan but I don’t see many heroes busting into a Folk Nation or MS-13 safe-house and kicking ass…) and give him one of the STUPIDEST labels I’ve ever seen “Wingman for Hire”. That sounds like you’re going to pay him to go to a bar with you and head off the ugly friend of the blonde with the leather mini-skirt. Way to be relevant, Marvel…

I would definitely say these are leading into a new Heroes For Hire group… I missed the announcement that Black Panther would be the new man without fear though?
Whatever they can do to get Sam Wilson into anybody else’s radar is a good thing. I like the character but if the only exposure to him you’re likely to get is Captain America then he’ll never become more mainstream. My favorite thing about him lately has been his addition to the cast of Marvel’s Super Hero Squad cartoon show on Cartoon Network. He plays the loose cannon that frequently thinks outside the box and takes down the bad guy. At least in the episode I watched last, which was a slightly older episode but still. Not that I want there to be a million Falcon stories like Wolverine or Deadpool, but he does need to be diversified a little bit. It’s been a while since he was an active member of the Avengers, granted his appointment was almost an affirmitive action kind of thing, which was actually more of a way to push Clint Barton off the team, but that was a long time ago.
