This was one of the best mailbags to date. There were a lot of good questions and answers, and not too many questions like “my players are being douche bags, what do I do?” Sometimes the mailbag is more like gamer therapy.
As for the hate mail, I have a few things to say about it. First off, I’ve never even considered giving up on Critical Hit for sticking with 4th addition. This podcast got me to play D&D for the first time in almost 2 decades, and for a time, I enjoyed playing 4e. When 5e came out, I found I liked it better, so I started a campaign with the new edition and haven’t looked back.
As for Critical Hit, I listen to this podcast, not for the mechanics, but for the story, the characters, and the people playing. I find it amazing that we’ve been so lucky to have six years of continuous content. I look forward to the wee hours of Saturday morning when I can go out front of my work and pick up wifi so I can download a new episode. I wish it didn’t ever have to end, regardless of what edition is being played.
Thanks again guys, for ALL of the podcasts on this network.
Thanks Frederick! Have a great weekend!
Couldn’t agree more.
I don’t even like playing 4e. I have nothing against it as a system, it’s just not my cup of tea. But that doesn’t detract from the experience at all.
Matthew, that highly offensive game we played in college was, I believe, Nihilistic Motorcyclists. Players scored points by performing increasingly heinous acts including rape, and the innocence of the target of that action further boosted the point value.
I think it only took one session before I started to get physically ill.

Yeah, it was seriously gross and awful. Moreso in retrospect…
Stephen, I played that spy game you’re describing in high school. We called it “Assassins”, but I don’t remember there being formal rules you could purchase. I took out one of the main assassins from a rival team with a “poison” squirt gun. There’s a Wikipedia article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin_(game)
Someone suggested it was “Killer” from Steve Jackson Games. I can’t find a full and complete guide on it where it talks about building the weapons, but it seems a lot of these games from the early to mid-80s were due in large part to the Cold War, and that one little movie from 1985 called “Gotcha!” I’m going to keep looking (in my spare time) as I think you are all pointing me in the right directions.
Oh, man… Gotcha was so bizarre. I remember loving that movie in high school!
