Previously in She-Hulk: Jennifer Walters is an attorney back on Earth, and even after receiving her Hulk powers, she continued to practice law. When her cousin, Bruce Banner, A.K.A. the Hulk, needs to go off-world, she agrees to help… for a while.
Planet She-Hulk #1 opens with the funeral of Hiro-Kala, the son of the Hulk. Bruce asks Jen to stay for five days to help maintain peace. However, Hulk is running late, and Jen starts looking for a way off-planet. When She-Hulk is invited to the wedding of Korven Blackjaw, she sees an opportunity to meet Rowan Creed, who owns a small fleet of ships. Unfortunately, as the guest of honor, she must slay a monster as part of the festivities.
At the wedding, Jen bests the monster and helps begin the ceremony. We also learn that Korven seeks the throne and is marrying one of Hiro-Kala’s widows. Just as Jen tries to negotiate for a ship, the wedding is attacked by a group called the Thousand Eyes, who succeed in killing the bride.
I admit I wasn’t sure what comic I wanted to review, and I picked this one purely because of the cover. Planet She-Hulk #1 (and most Planet Hulk titles) are visually engaging. Seeing the Hulks in gladiator-style armor with fantasy-inspired weapons is always striking. As for the plot, I didn’t expect too much. I read She-Hulk comics for their witty banter and sharp commentary, and that’s precisely what this issue delivered. That said, there’s also the beginning of a deeper conversation about order versus chaos. As a lawyer, Jen appreciates structure and rules, which contrast sharply with the war and strength-based system of Sakaar. Although this theme isn’t explored in great depth yet, it gives readers something to ponder.
The art is fantastic. She-Hulk in armor, wielding a massive sword while retaining her signature purple and green, looks incredible. Watching her leap into the air to slay the monster is just plain fun. Great work from the entire creative team.
I’m fully engaged with Planet She-Hulk #1. The story is straightforward, but the banter is sharp and entertaining. It delivers precisely what I expected, and for that, it earns a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
