Meanwhile, is Cobra Commander’s alliance with Destro on the verge of collapse?
AN EYE FOR AN EYE
As G.I. Joe #10 opens, The Baroness has been (literally) stabbed in the back by Cover Girl, only to find Major Bludd demanding that she gouge out the Baroness’ eye. When she refuses, Bludd drives Baroness to attack HER by reminding her that Raptor is stalking her parents.
Back at The Pit, Clutch and his new pal, the Autobot Hound, set out to find some Energon to help recharge Hound’s metaphorical-and-literal batteries. Unfortunately, Clutch’s erratic behavior gets the attention of Risk, who is certain that his fellow Joe is brainwashed and compromised.
As The Baroness and Cover Girl fight for his entertainment, Bludd is a little TOO happy, reading one of his ridiculous poems, but he is surprised when Baroness snaps Cover Girl’s neck. It’s pretty shocking stuff, but not as shocking as Mercer’s arrival, with a platoon of heavily-armed Cobra troopers to murder Risk and Clutch.
HE’S RIGHT BEHIND ME, ISN’T HE?
Milana’s art manages to be the star of this issue, by a hair’s breadth, thanks to Hound, but the story is also compelling. Clutch’s bad decisions come back to haunt him, but the battle between Baroness and Cover Girl is the center of it all. Their fight is beautifully drawn, and perfectly paced, right up to Cover Girl’s demise… and beyond. The only real downside for me is the fact that we’re in the third issue of an arc that promises to go at least one more, despite taking place over less than a day. The Energon timeline is said to have taken a year at this point, but it’s hard to square that with the decompressed time in the stories. That’s a minor complaint in a book this gripping, though. As somebody who has been reading G.I. Joe since ’82, this book is so good that it actually made Raptor terrifying. Given that, before this, he was best known for being left to starve to death while buried alive, that’s some high praise.
BOTTOM LINE: TENSE AND EFFORTLESSLY COOL
Even with my questions about the Energon timelines, G.I. Joe #10 hits the sweet spot, with all the close-up character work that makes Skybound’s Hasbro properties such entertaining reads, as well as the ol’ ultra-violence, the proverbial bait-and-switch, and a straight-up horror movie scare ending, combining with excellent art for 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. I am impressed by how well and how consistently the creative teams have kept up the quality of the Energon books, and I hope they keep it going.
