Previously in Zatanna: Zatanna returns to the Crimson Palace Nightclub for a final performance to save Adam and Blue Devil from themselves. But first, she’ll have to go up against not only the Lady White but her secret ally–one who’s been seeking revenge against Zatanna and her family since the very beginning. Could Zatanna’s magic be the key to discovering past truths before her time runs out in the present?
ALL SEEMS LOST
As we pick up, Princess Allura has won. Lady White has gotten her revenge on Brother Night, and they are moments from finally destroying him when… MISDIRECTION! As Brother Night slips away into the walls of the Crimson Palace, Zatanna returns with reinforcements in the form of the entire Justice League Dark team! While Wonder Woman, Doctor Fate, Detective Chimp, Ragman, Madame Xanadu, and Etrigan battle Allura’s mooks, Zatanna herself finally gets a chance to enter the mind of The Blue Devil, where she finds a terrified Dan Cassidy in a prison of his own making. As they battle for the souls trapped within, Zatanna has to face the lie created by The Laevateinn and discover whether or not truth is stronger.
Aren’t you glad she brought Wonder Woman?
ENTER: JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK!
I’m not going to lie: The central premise of this miniseries is a very confusing one. It took a couple of read-throughs to straighten it all out in my mind, but that ended up making the ending more satisfying. It’s nice to see that, in the Justice League Unlimited era, the JL Dark is still a going concern and protecting the magical side of the DCU, although I was, at first, a little bit bothered that Zatanna needed the backup to wrap everything up. The final answers about what happened with Zatanna’s mother, Sindella are wrapped up well, but a lot of that heavy lifting is done by Campbell’s art. The lush coloring strengthens those visuals even more, making the otherworldly events that much more unnerving and surreal.
BOTTOM LINE: A FUN WRAP-UP
Though it’s a bit difficult to approach, and there are events that I don’t wish to spoil for your enjoyment, Zatanna #6 closes up this arc with aplomb and some well-crafted art, leaving a few threads for sequels or follow-up and earning 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. With so many heroes active in the DC Universe, the “stage magician” hook gives the lovely Ms. Zatara her own relatively unique niche, and it’s nice to see this story take advantage of that vivid backdrop.
