Previously in Tramps of The Apocalypse: Following the ten-year Sildenafil wars of 2053, Earth has become a barren wasteland. Factions of surviving men led by “Quest Ragnor, King of Males” have taken over the remnants of cities and towns across the globe, capturing and enslaving all women.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WELCOME TO THE FUTURE
Tramps of The Apocalypse #1 opens up with the three main characters cruising through the wasteland. They realize that they are running low on supplies and in need of a refill. They spot a truck in the distance being helmed by four men. Using an erectile dysfunction pill as bait, they’re able to subdue one of them and use as a bargaining chip for the supplies on the truck. One of the men pull out a pistol and takes a shot but only manages to shoot the hostage. Out of bullets, he’s quickly taken down and killed by one of the women. A third man tries to stop them but is also taken out. A fourth man is found hiding and tells them that he can lead them to an ancient artifact if they let him live. Elsewhere in a city, news of the attack reaches the leader of men, and he vows to hunt the women down.
A POIGNANT AND UNASHAMED SATIRE
Tramps of The Apocalypse #1 is a funny comic with its tongue planted as far into its cheek as it can before exploding out the other side. It appears to set its sights on elements of male dominated culture, like the co-opting of religion to push misogyny and the alt-right pipeline that leads from “male empowerment” to gun-waving racism and fascism. When it’s really sticking it to these things, the comic is at its best and its over-the-top approach really meshes with its B-Movie/Grindhouse stylings. Where things falter a bit comes from the actual Tramps of The Apocalypse themselves. Rather than being three unique characters, they feel more like three shades of the same color. They all have a similar acerbic personality, which makes the scenes where they are speaking to each other feel flat. But the bar has been set pretty high in terms of ridiculousness and tone, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this series keeps it up and what comes next.
HAS IT’S MOMENTS
Whenever a comic has a very distinct look, it is a sure bet that it’s going to be a case of “either you like it, or you don’t,” and that’s absolutely the case with Tramps of The Apocalypse #1. Here we see a stripped-down, minimalistic style that is reminiscent of the indie comics scene. In a lot of cases, this isn’t my favorite type of comic art, but in rare cases I think it fits, and this is one of those cases. There are some moments though when they’re shooting for a dynamic image with a lot going on, that the style fails them a bit and the art just gets messy. Color-wise, it’s mostly a black and white comic, with the exception being that in the first half of the book, the shading is done with pink instead of grey or blue. This goes away about midway through and while this most likely is intentional and purposeful, it makes it, so the second half of this comic is far less interesting to look at.
BOTTOM LINE: A FUNNY AND UNAPOLOGETIC MIDDLE FINGER
Tramps of The Apocalypse #1 doesn’t pull any punches, especially when making it clear about who they’re hitting both in-universe and in our real world. It’s a good time that embraces its ridiculousness and style with both arms. It’s not perfect though. The lack of identity in some of the characters makes some exchanges come off awkwardly and without any fluctuations in personality. The visuals aren’t going to be for everyone, but I think they work here for the most part, even if it ditches one of the things that gives it a unique look halfway through the issue. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Tramps of the Apocalypse #1
A few things hurt Tramps of The Apocalypse #1 from page to page. But when looked at from a bird’s eye view, this is a witty and punkish comic that is full of style.
