Previously in Absolute Green Lantern: EARTH WILL BE JUDGED BY ABIN SUR! Abin Sur has arrived, and he is here to judge all of the people of Evergreen, including Jo Mullein and Hal Jordan. But is this alien friend or foe, and just what will his judgment bring?
“IT WANTS TO WIN THE ARGUMENT”
We pick up where issue one left off, with Hal Jordan, black hand and all, facing Jo Mullein and her green ring in the ruins of Alan Scott’s Atom Bomb Cafe & Diner. She cautions him to remember “what happened to John,” and the story jumps back to the arrival of the glowing lantern in Evergreen. An alien creature came forth, calling itself Abin Sur and declaring that judgment has come. Sheriff Guy Gardner immediately pulls a gun, which leads to a tense standoff while most of the town watches. Abin Sur declares Guy to be a being who doesn’t exist in the spectrum of light, and he lowers his gun… and then the dying begins. In the present, Hal and Jo discuss unseen things that happened, and he explains that the force that has overtaken him doesn’t want to absorb the light… it wants to supersede it, to win an ancient argument. As the issue ends, we add a third temporal element to the mix, between the Abin Sur confrontation and the tense interaction between Green Lantern and Black Hand, as John Stewart wonders if they can defeat Abin Sur together.
A LITTLE HARDER TO FOLLOW
Of course, it’s an idea that seems to have led to his doom. More than that, it adds a confusing new dimension to the story being told, complicating the script enough that, even after multiple reads, I still feel like I’m missing something. The art also has some interesting dimensions, with clear overtones of Dragon Ball Z and manga influences throughout, especially in the visual depictions of Abin Sur. It is very effective in conveying the disturbing nature of Hal’s possession, the alien horrors that have come to town, and Jo’s new green energies. But it’s less so when we’re trying to convey the normalcy of Evergreen or a Guy Gardner trying to protect the town. Guy, especially, is incredibly thick of limb, with a massive, bristly beard that is nearly as alien as the tentacled spaceman he is confronting. Even with those questions, I still enjoy Ewing’s horror take on another big comic icon, but somewhat less than I did after reading last issue.
BOTTOM LINE: NOT AS GOOD AS LAST TIME, STILL GOOD
All in all, though, Absolute Green Lantern #2 still manages to deliver on the terror of an alien invasion, the horror of ancient forces taking over your mind and body, and the sheer unpleasantness of Guy Gardner in any reality, and does so with art that doesn’t feel like the average DC book, earning 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. Obviously, the resolution of those unanswered questions is the point of this first story arc, but the way they get answered will decide whether I continue reading after that story is over.

ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #2
Doubling down on the horror and showing us Hal Jordan at his lowest, this issue is still strong, but the timelines confused me.
