    DARK PYRAMID #2

    Writer: Paul Tobin
    Artist: PJ Holden
    Colorist: Sara Colella
    Letterer: Taylor Esposito
    Editor: Christina Harrington
    Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
    Cover Price: $4.99
    Release Date: April 30th, 2025

Previously in Dark Pyramid: Famous climbing live-streamer Hooky has gone missing on the side of Denali. This has led to a small town at its base being flooded by Hooky’s fans, gathering to party and maybe try to save him. This includes his girlfriend, who has just met face to face with a monster named Eve.

ROUGH NIGHT AT OL’ FOOT CAMP

Dark Pyramid #2 opens with Becca and Shailene being confronted by the monstrous Eve. The duo makes an escape through a window and begins to run as fast as they can through the woods. They manage to make it to a set of markers that seem to set up the boundary of Eve’s territory, and she disappears. Shailene then tells the story of how, back in the 90s, a Chinese military test unveiled a giant pyramid buried beneath Denali. Shailene then says that they should go to a place called Foot Camp, which is a giant cabin her girlfriend runs for climbers. At Foot Camp, a massive party, full of Hooky’s would-be rescuers, is raging. Everyone is having a great time when one of the party-goers looks out the window and sees Eve staring back at him. Becca and Shailene arrive just in time to see Eve on the rampage, and there’s little they can do to help.

GOES FULL HORROR MOVIE, WITH QUESTIONABLE RESULTS

Dark Pyramid #2 really ups the ante when it comes to the horror elements that were teased at in the first issue. So much so that what we end up getting feels more like a campy monster flick than anything with depth. From the full-on house party massacre complete with random nudity, to the shadowy military group that appears, everything about this issue feels like it’s been pulled from a list of cliches. This isn’t helped by the fact that the characters are all insufferable. While there was some charm to it in the first issue, it’s turned up a notch here, which makes all the characters feel like the person you’re always happy to see get got in a slasher flick. These problems are only accentuated by some rough pacing and structure issues. For example, after Shailene and Becca escape Eve, via a very convenient setting element that is never explained, Shailene then dumps her personal lore as well as the lore surrounding Denali’s role in a secret Chinese Government nuclear experiment back in 1992, this then transitions right into all the events that happens at Foot Camp. It was a clunky way to handle this that felt like it was there simply to get it out of the way and clear the road for stuff later.

    GETTING ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES

There are certain things that the art in Dark Pyramid #2 handles very well. I particularly liked how it depicts the snowy wilderness, and in scenes like when Foot Camp is revealed, the warm glow from inside it contrasts beautifully against this setting. What I wasn’t a fan of was how it dealt with gore. The best way I can describe the gore is to say it’s lazy. There is some serious violence in this comic, but they lose some of their impact when the depiction of it boils down to some squiggly lines and a smear of red.

LOST ITS CHARM AND GAINED CLICHES

Dark Pyramid #2 took a decent setup, dealing with internet culture and an intriguing mystery, and didn’t build upon it. Instead, this issue devolves into an uninteresting, typical horror comic. Some pacing problems and unlikable characters don’t help matters much and even manage to diminish some of the scenes where some intrigue could have been generated. 2 out of 5 stars.

Dark Pyramid #2 doesn’t do anything to establish this series as anything other than a typical creature feature which is a shame considering the unique setup and setting it has.

At a young age, Jonathan was dragged to a small town in Wisconsin. A small town in Wisconsin that just so happened to have a comic book shop. Faced with a decision to either spend the humid summers and bitter winters traipsing through the pine trees or in climate controlled comfort with tales of adventure, horror, and romance, he chose the latter. Jonathan can often be found playing video games, board games, reading comics and wincing as his “to watch” list grows wildly out of control.
