    PAIN’S JUST A FEELING

Green Lantern #3 starts off with Hal being interrogated by Amanda Waller and King Shark.  He doesn’t comply and in turn, is tortured.  Back in space the remaining Green Lanterns who haven’t been captured try and figure out what to do, when Kyle Rayner, who has become multicolored, reveals that if Thaaros is able to gain control of the whole emotional spectrum, he’ll gain control of the whole universe.  Things then shift to Sinestro as he embraces his new Red Ring.  A quick scene showing the JSA fighting Task Force VII reveals a new aspect of Alan Scott’s powerset.  Things then transition to Las Vegas where Carol Ferris’ former fiance is dealing with being left at the altar when a new power ring appears.  Back on Earth, Hal is able to escape and finds himself within reach of all the weapons he’s going to need in the upcoming fight.   A backup story sheds some light on Thaaros’ origin and some of his motivation behind wanting to bring absolute order to the universe.

    MORE REFERENCE THAN STORY

If you’re planning on reading the upcoming Absolute Power event, then this is a great comic book.  The usage of the vignettes fits the objective of this issue well, which appears to be establishing what most of the Green Lantern main players are up to at the onset of this event so there’s little question regarding why or why not certain characters appear or don’t appear later down the road and considering the size of the upcoming event, this is a very needed thing.  If you’re not interested in Absolute Power, this comic isn’t going to do anything for you.  As mentioned before, this is more concerned with establishing the current state of things, rather than pushing anything forward.  Also, a few of the vignettes straight-up direct readers to other titles, so even if these events pique your interest, you can get a better dose of them elsewhere.  Really, there are just two things that happen in this issue that feel like they have any real consequence and are going to be an ongoing part of this series and not a different title.  The first, it’s the revelation that Waller is only playing along with Tharros for now and that she doesn’t know how Hal’s ring works also, the end of this issue with Hal coming across the armory is pretty fun and it generated a decent amount of excitement for what he’s going to do next.  The more important development though, is the reveal of a new part of the emotional spectrum, sorrow.  This moment should be impactful, but the last 20 years of Green Lantern comics have lessened the impact of a new Lantern Corps.  With every color getting their own lantern corps, plus things like gold lanterns and ultraviolet lanterns being thrown into the mix, having a new ring pop up just isn’t all that thrilling anymore.  Especially the way it’s done here, which is basically one page of a guy crying, then bam, Sorrow Lantern.  There’s no build to it, nor any indication to how important this new development is to the universe.  It just sort of happens.

BOTTOM LINE: FINE RECAP, NOT MUCH ELSE

For those who are invested in the Absolute Power event, this will be a nice way to learn what this particular corner of the universe is up to at the moment.  Those who have been following this series will have considerably less to enjoy about this issue.  The one impactful moment of this issue is treated as an afterthought making the whole thing feel skippable if you’re not planning to read the rest of Absolute Power.  3 out of 5 stars.

    Sorrow Lantern is Sad

Green Lantern #13 treats its ongoing story as an afterthought as it devotes a majority of its time recapping what other characters are up to in relation to Absolute Power.

    Jonathan Cadotte

At a young age, Jonathan was dragged to a small town in Wisconsin. A small town in Wisconsin that just so happened to have a comic book shop. Faced with a decision to either spend the humid summers and bitter winters traipsing through the pine trees or in climate controlled comfort with tales of adventure, horror, and romance, he chose the latter. Jonathan can often be found playing video games, board games, reading comics and wincing as his “to watch” list grows wildly out of control.
