Previously in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return: With the Green Dragon Power Coin in the hands of someone’s identity that will shock the rest of the Power Rangers, a fateful battle on the moon commences! But as climactic events unfold, who will remain to carry on the legacy of the Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers?

Will the world still need them?

    THE SIXTH RANGER ARRIVES

The last issue’s big cliffhanger featured the arrival of a new, female Green Ranger, who immediately greeted Kimberly with a shocked, “MOM?” Jason, Billy, and Zack are all shocked to hear that Kimberly and Tommy had a baby, but her combat skills aren’t quite up to the task of battling Selena Repulsa. Freeing themselves from their force shield with the help of the Dragon Dagger, the three Rangers are able to hold off a horde of Putty Patrollers, but even with Kimberly’s help, Olivia loses her Power Coin, allowing Selena to reopen the Morphin Grid and bring back…

    Tommy Oliver.

Needless to say, Rita’s daughter is unhappy to see that it’s not her mother.

    THE BIG SWERVE

The still twentyish Tommy is shocked to see his old friends twenty years older, but none of the Rangers are prepared when Selena uses the stolen Yellow Ranger powers, including a new design that amalgamizes her parents (Zedd and Rita) and the Saber-Tooth Tiger powers. It’s well-drawn, as are the combat sequences, and while the art doesn’t use perfect likenesses, young Tommy’s appearance is absolutely perfect. (I’m also amused by the cameo appearance of the five members of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the source material for Mighty Morphin back in 1993.) The surprises here are satisfying, were well set up, and all come together into something satisfying, until the final page of the issue. Though this series was solicited as a four-issue series, it ends with a cliffhanger for more adventures in this alternate Ranger reality, and while I do want to see them, it’s quite irritating to see it play out in this fashion.

BOTTOM LINE: THE ENDING MAKES ME LIKE IT A LITTLE LESS

That annoyance aside, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 is still a good comic and a good ending chapter for this story, providing closure for the big mystery, giving us three interesting new Rangers, and looking really good doing it, earning 4 out of 5 stars overall. The question now is, will there be more of this? And more importantly, when?

    A Strong Finish

The big twist was effectively foreshadowed, but the final page WASN'T, and the overall package is a fun read.

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
