So You Want To Read Comics: Ongoing Image Comics Edition

Jonathan CadotteBy Jonathan CadotteJanuary 30, 20244 Mins Read

You’ll be all set for the year after this week’s, So You Want to Read Comics.  This is our weekly feature where we take a look at a single topic or genre, then give you two comic book recommendations, perfect for new readers, based on that topic or genre.  This week we’re looking at the best ongoing titles from Image Comics that are great for new readers to jump into.

Over the last two weeks we’ve taken a look at great ongoing titles from DC Comics and Marvel Comics, so it’s only right that we take a look at the best stuff from the third largest comic book publisher, Image Comics.  Unlike their competitors at DC and Marvel, Image Comics doesn’t have the same sort of connected universe, this is primarily due to their offerings being mostly creator owned.  This leads to Image’s offerings to be more miniseries focused while their long-running titles like Spawn and Saga are very long-running and not always the easiest to jump into.  So, if you’re looking for a short-term investment or prefer your stories to wrap up at some point, Image is a great place to look.  But, if you’re looking for something to follow for a long time, it could be a little harder.  But, definitely not impossible.

Here are a couple of great ongoing titles that have come out recently from Image Comics, which will be great for people looking to jump into comics.

    Bone Orchard: The Passageway

    Writer: Jeff Lemire

    Artist: Andrea Sorrentino

    Publisher: Image Comics

In 2023, veteran comic book creators Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino came together and launched an ambitious project called The Bone Orchard Mythos.  The idea behind it is to create a series of self-contained stories that all tie into an over-arching framing called The Bone Orchard.  If you’re familiar with H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and how the books that comprise that aren’t directly connected, but all involve characters interacting with the same inexplicable forces, this is similar.  This particular title revolves around a mysterious lighthouse where a scientist has been called to investigate a strange occurrence.  While there he encounters something strange without explanation and it slowly starts to consume their thoughts and actions.  There have already been a couple of titles already released as part of The Bone Orchard Mythos including Tenement and Ten Thousand Black Feathers.

    Quest

    Writer: Jonathan Luna

    Artist: Jonathan Luna

    Publisher: Image Comics

Every now and then, you just want a classic adventure story with a fun cast of characters and a fairly simple objective.  That’s exactly what you get with Quest, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bring something new to the world.  In this title readers are introduced to Princess Anya, who is about to get married to the love of her life, unfortunately for her, he’s abducted by demons.  Anya then sets out to rescue him along with her loyal bodyguard.  These two then start recruiting other warriors and magical beings to their cause, giving this a bit of a Dungeons and Dragons feel.  What makes this series exciting and sets it apart from other traditional fantasy comics, is its setting.  While it’s clearly a fantasy world, it’s based on Southeastern Asian-inspired visuals, rather than the European ones that are often considered default for fantasy realms.  What makes this such a good title for new readers is that it’s a story that will feel familiar yet different enough to be interesting, but also because it’s very new.  As of right now, only four issues have been released, with the first collected volume due out in June.

What did you think of these recommendations?  What are some of your favorite ongoing titles from Image Comics?  Let us know in the comments section below.

    Jonathan Cadotte

At a young age, Jonathan was dragged to a small town in Wisconsin. A small town in Wisconsin that just so happened to have a comic book shop. Faced with a decision to either spend the humid summers and bitter winters traipsing through the pine trees or in climate controlled comfort with tales of adventure, horror, and romance, he chose the latter. Jonathan can often be found playing video games, board games, reading comics and wincing as his “to watch” list grows wildly out of control.
