Previously in Daredevil: Daredevil sacrificed himself in Hell but was resurrected and became a priest overseeing Saint Nicholas Youth Home. He saw a demon targeting Elektra Natchios, prompting him to don the costume once more. Now he learns that Ben Urich is also possessed, and the latest gang, “The Heat,” has hired Daredevil’s greatest enemy, Bullseye!
Daredevil #4 starts with Matt continuing his hunt for The Heat to gain more information. He has a meeting with Ben Urich. During this time, Ben gets a phone call, and Matt overhears him discussing an attack on Butch Pharris while also catching a glimpse of the demon controlling him. Matt is then notified l to pull one of his kids out of jail for shoplifting, making him late to stop The Heat’s attack. He arrives to see a deadly battle between “The Heat” and security, and after taking out all the gang members, Bullseye throws a knife at Butch. The blade doesn’t kill Butch, and Bullseye seems to get the effect he wants before escaping. On the street, Ben arrives in a fancy car, and Daredevil pulls out a cross to exorcise the demon.
I love the balance between priest Matt and demon Matt. We’ve seen this theme before, and this new creative team’s take on it is engaging. I understand Matt in Daredevil #4. I know he is pulled in many directions, and I want to see him balance it, but the better story is that he stays in the youth home and lets Elektra do the Daredevil thing, but I highly doubt this story ends with that idea. However, this balance of helping the kids or stopping the lousy guy keeps me on the edge of my seat because Daredevil and Father Matt make a distinct difference. I also want to note that Matt has many small moments here, like when he tells the kid he bails from the police that he won’t abandon them or the dialogue between him and Bullseye. Some interesting subtle writing here.
On the art side, I think the action didn’t grip me as much as in previous issues. But there was a scene where we saw Matt talking to Ben, and we got a look on Matt’s face that engaged me. At that point, he is acting as Daredevil and a priest, and I got that in this image. Good consistent work by the creative team overall.
Daredevil #4 is an excellent continuation of Zdarsky and Checchetto’s run. While I was unsure during that first issue, the narrative is slowly picking up, and I love every moment. With that in mind, Daredevil #4 is a 4 out of 5 stars.
