SAG-AFTRA & AMPTP Fail to Reach a Deal
With New York Comic Con already underway many Spoilerites have had eagle eyes on the SAG-AFTRA strike. In the wrap up of the WGA strike fans were hopeful for a last minute resolution to the actors strike which would open the floodgates for geeky struck work questions across the weekend.
SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP re-entered negotiation on Monday of this week and things seemed to be off to a promising start with membership receiving a message on Monday evening letting everyone know both side would be taking Tuesday off and return to the table on Wednesday. Silence followed before this post on SAG-AFTRA’s official Instagram Thursday morning:

I encourage everyone reading Did You Hear? this week to click through all slides and give them a thorough read to appreciate the full scale of just how badly negotiations appear to have deteriorated between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP.
While, of course, hope still remains for a deal to be struck before the end of the year it seems highly-unlikely-to-impossible New York Comic Con will be able to reap the benefits of last minute surprise appearances or a sudden panic rewriting of major panel questions this weekend.
Biggest News from New York Comic Con so far!
Fear not, Spoilerites! All is not lost!
There’s still plenty of geekery and comic-related goodness to be had at this year’s NYCC. Thursday got things off to a rolicking start and I’ve curated a list below of what I think you need to know about now that day 1 has wrapped up:
Keith Giffen has passed away
Sorry to start this off on a downer and on something that didn’t even happen at New York Comic Con. On Wednesday of this week comic book internet mourned the loss of a legend and an icon, Keith Giffen.
In accordance with his family’s wishes, the following was posted to his Facebook page:
I told them I was sick…
Anything not to go to New York Comic Con
Thanx
Keith Giffen 1952-2023
Bwah ha ha ha ha
Fan of what is colloquially known as The Bwah Ha Ha Justice League will certainly appreciate the power and humour of Giffen’s statement.
Sufficeth to state: now is the time to catch up on reading Giffen’s oeuvre if it has slipped you past until now.
Kid Cudi is writing a comic – for Image!

Announced on Thursday Image Comics will publish Moon Man written by Kid Cudi and Kyle Higgins. Fans of the musical artist will recognize the name from some of his previous work. At the Lunar Breakfast on Thursday morning of New York Comic Con Cudi said:
“I started reading comics when I was about 9 years old, I was into the Supermans and the Spider-Mans, but there was one comic I was obsessed with as a kid, and it was SCUD the Disposable Assassin. I always thought it would be cool to have my own comic one day, but I never really leaned into that. I was more a music kid.
The Moon Man idea has been with me since around 2012, I’ve been creating themes with my music, hinting at the possibility that there might be a Moon Man actually in existence. It was only right that I finally gathered my thoughts together and crafted this story and finally lived my dreams.”
Dragon Ball Daima announced
Yes, anime and voice over is still un-struck-work per the SAG-AFTRA rules! Dragon Ball really ran away with the love and the crowd on Thursday. Fans crowded into the panel and crowded into online viewing platforms to hear about Toei Animation had to share about the much-anticipated Dragon Ball Daima.
The new anime series is slated for a 2024 release. Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma will all be present as well as beloved Dragon Ball creators. Franchise creator Akira Toriyama was stated to be “deeply involved … beyond his usual capacity.” Executive Producer Akio Iyoku added:
Toriyama “planned entirely new episodes for the storyline.”
