Previously in Silk: Bitten by a radioactive spider, Cindy Moon transformed into the web-slinging hero, Silk. Trapped within the dream world with the Ja-Li, a sleep demon, she managed to escape with the help of Wong and her brother Albert. Unraveling the mystery behind it, she discovered Saya Ishii and her brother Max were responsible. And to her horror, Saya merged with the Ja-Li, becoming a monstrous entity.

    AWAKENING FROM NIGHTMARES

Silk #4 begins with Cindy evading Saya and going to the Sanctum Sanctorum. She reunites with Albert, Wong, and their captive, Max. In an intense interrogation, Silk presses Max, revealing that Saya has undergone a nightmarish transformation into a monster. In exchange for assisting them, Max agrees to talk to his sister and attempt to save her. Accompanied by Wong and Max, Silk proceeds to Saya’s apartment, leaving Albert behind despite his objections. Inside the apartment, a confrontation unfolds as Saya, consumed by her monstrous form, targets Tony Stark and Reed Richards. Max attempts to reason with her, but his efforts are met with aggression. Through a combined effort, Silk and Wong gain the upper hand momentarily. However, Saya reveals her newfound ability to enter the dream world at will, issuing a dire threat against someone dear to Silk. Meanwhile, Albert drifts into slumber, plagued by his own unsettling nightmare.

    HANDLING PRESSURES

The central tension in Silk #4 revolves around Cindy’s contrasting relationships with her brother and Saya and Max. There is an exchange that occurs where Max explains his history with Saya, portraying his desire to protect her. This mirrors Cindy’s treatment of Albert in the current situation. Considering Albert lacks superpowers, Cindy opts to leave him in a safe place instead of taking him to confront Saya. Admittedly, I concur with Cindy’s decision. Albert’s presence near Saya poses a significant risk, especially after his previous life-endangering involvement. While the comic seems to nudge readers towards perceiving Silk’s choice as questionable, it’s challenging to fully empathize with the alternative perspective, leaving a somewhat underwhelming impact. The conclusion of this idea and the lesson it conveys will be intriguing to observe in the final issue.

Regarding the artwork, while competent and consistent, it doesn’t seize immediate attention. It misses those standout moments that truly captivate the viewer. Nevertheless, the character design of Saya fused with the Ja-Li deserves commendation for its creativity and appeal.

BOTTOM LINE: A TECHNICALLY SOUND ISSUE

Silk #4 offers a commendable narrative that dares to take creative risks. While I may not entirely align with these choices, I respect the approach taken by the creative team. As a fan of Silk, I’m eager to witness the series’ culmination in the forthcoming issue. Silk #4 warrants a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.
