Previously in Immortal X-Men: The Hellfire Gala was attacked by Orchis, who booby-trapped Krakoan medicine that could kill countless humans with a mere thought. Believing he had no choice, Xavier sent mutantkind through the Krakoan gates, thinking it was a strategic withdrawal. When he reached out for his people, he discovered they were gone.
Immortal X-Men #14 reveals the current situation of some members of the Quiet Council. Charles Xavier is consumed by guilt, leading to inaction. He has assumed a solitary post on Krakoa and disregards pleas from Emma Frost. He commits to action after using an illusion to repel some Orchis invaders, though his intentions remain unclear. Sebastian Shaw struck a deal with Mother Righteous for the island of Krakoa. While he technically owns it, he realizes he received no money. Instead, Wilson Fisk holds all of Krakoa’s financial assets. Shaw devises a plan to exploit the island for its resources. Lastly, Exodus, Hope, and Destiny find themselves in a desert with Krakoa’s surviving mutants. They follow Exodus to a Promised Land, although their plan is grounded solely in faith.
I appreciate that Immortal X-Men #14 finally answers some lingering questions. We learn about survivors and unfolding plans. However, the story currently features individual units pursuing their own agendas. Iceman battles Orchis, Cable, and Bishop confront the Children of the Vault, and Shadowcat has her personal objectives. This divergence from the unity seen when heroes and villains united under Krakoa’s banner feels like a departure. I miss that sense of cohesion. When isolated, Charles Xavier lacks the same intrigue; his strengths align more with a teaching role.
Similarly, interactions between Shaw and the Hellfire Club intrigue me; I desire to witness these characters engaging with one another. While the change of pace is well-crafted, I fear reader fatigue from encountering many separate titles with distinct narratives. Nevertheless, Immortal X-Men #14 exhibits promise, complemented by exceptional artwork.
Immortal X-Men #14 brims with imaginative concepts. However, introducing numerous storylines risks overwhelming readers and impeding the story’s momentum. Yet, this threshold hasn’t been crossed as of now. With this in mind, I rate Immortal X-Men #14 as 4 out of 5 stars.
