Previously in Strange Academy: Strange Academy had an eventful inaugural year, where they fought wish-dealing magicians and the lord of the Dark Dimension. Even with the safety of their teachers, one student paid the ultimate price. Now it is summer break, and a small group of students remained on campus to further their studies.
Strange Academy: Miles Morales #1 starts with Gus, Shaylee, Toth, and German working on a few projects. Ms. Stanton requests they attend the Multiversal Math Bowl and represent Strange Academy. They pick up Doyle, who is mourning Iric, and head to New York. The master of ceremonies is Miles Morales, who is doing this for public speaking credit. Miles introduces Equation, the inventor of enchantimatics. Enchantimatics attempts to understand magic through math, but the ceremony is interrupted when the Fey Council attacks. The students of Strange Academy push back the attackers with Spider-Man, who shows up in the nick of time.
The rest of the math bowl goes on, and Strange Academy is doing exceptionally well, earning first and second place. However, Ms. Stanton has gone missing, and German, Toth, and Gus realize that Equation faked the Fey attack on the ceremony. He then uses enchantimatics to trap the three in a book with Ms. Stanton. German, however, contact Miles to plead for help before he is captured.
Strange Academy: Miles Morales #1 is a fun comic that features straightforward themes and adds a bit of fun to an ordinarily dark-themed book. The last arc featured Dormammu and the corruption of a student, as well as the death of another, so here, where we are just doing a fun school activity with some cosmic drama, it is engaging. However, there wasn’t a lot for me to grasp onto. None of the characters stood out for me, nor did I see anything particularly engaging. Now that we have the exposition done, I would like to see some more exciting relationship development between Miles and some of the students. That way, we can get some character growth without ruining the fun of the story.
I was ecstatic that Strange Academy had another title, even if it was designed as a small interim arc. I love these characters, and while I don’t think this is the best representation in the art of writing of what these characters would do, it filled an itch for me. This comic is a solid 3.5 out of 5, and I’ll be looking forward to the next issue.
